Soil Filter Fabric

Soil filter fabric solves two specific problems: holding soil behind retaining walls in place, and keeping drainage pipes from clogging with dirt. It does both by letting water through while stopping the soil that would otherwise travel with it.

The fabric is needle-punched rather than woven, which is what allows water to seep through while dirt is held back. Its design contains and repels dirt from eroding into unwanted areas under the pressure of gravity and water movement, and it is ruggedly built to hold heavy soil loads.

Installed correctly, it means you are not digging up clogged drainage lines and not rebuilding retaining walls because of soil seepage. Four weights across eighteen roll sizes, from 750 up to 4,500 sq ft.

Soil Filter Fabric Questions

Which weight do I need?

3.1 oz for light-duty drainage such as backyard french drains. 3.5 oz for general drainage and wall backfill, with the widest choice of sizes. 4 oz for heavier backfill or sharper aggregate. 6 oz for heavy soil loads, taller walls and commercial work.

How much do I need?

The eighteen roll sizes run from 750 up to 4,500 sq ft. Work out the area you are lining and allow extra for overlapping the joints, which are not optional on a filter layer.

Does it go behind the wall or under the stone?

Both. Line the excavated face and the base before the drainage stone goes in, and carry the fabric up high enough that backfill soil cannot spill over the top edge into the stone.

What is the most common installation mistake?

Stopping the fabric below the level of the backfill. Soil then washes straight over the top edge into the drainage stone, and the fabric below makes no difference at all.
