Gophers do not arrive across the lawn. They arrive underneath it, and by the time the mounds appear the tunnel network is already there. Traps, baits, repellents and vibrating stakes all treat the symptom. A physical barrier is the only approach that removes the route entirely, and gopher wire is that barrier: a woven steel mesh laid below the surface before the lawn, bed or planter goes in.
The whole product comes down to one dimension. At 3/4 inch across the flats of the hexagon, the opening is small enough to stop a young gopher — the size is set by a young gopher's shoulder girth at around eight weeks — and large enough that grass and plant roots grow through it unimpeded and water drains straight past. Tighter mesh chokes roots. Wider mesh lets the young ones through. This is the size that does both jobs at once, and it is not the same thing as chicken wire.
We stock it in two materials on 100-foot rolls: galvanized steel for 6–10+ years in the ground at the lower cost per square foot, and stainless steel for 25+ years where lifting the finished surface later would be expensive. Ground staples are required for both and sold alongside.

Both rolls are the same gopher mesh — 3/4″ hexagonal openings woven from 20 gauge wire — so they stop gophers identically. The only difference that matters is how long the steel survives buried in permanently damp soil.

Whichever you choose, each roll needs 100 ground staples to hold it flat while you backfill. They are sold separately in the grid above.
The sequence is short, and none of it needs specialist equipment. Clear and level the area, roll it with a lawn roller, then roll the wire out and stretch it flat against the soil.
Of all the approaches to gopher control, a physical barrier is the only one that removes the route rather than chasing the animal. For decades, both galvanized and stainless mesh with a 3/4 inch opening has been used to protect landscape areas from gopher intrusion, and a University of California, Davis study published in 2009 reiterated the point. It is worth understanding why that particular figure, because it is the difference between a barrier that works and one that quietly does not.
Go wider and young gophers pass straight through — they are considerably smaller than the adults doing the visible damage. Go tighter and you begin choking the roots of nearby trees and plantings, which defeats the purpose of protecting them. The 3/4 inch opening stops both young and mature animals while leaving room for everything you want growing to come through. General-purpose poultry netting is neither the right opening nor the right gauge, and it corrodes out of the ground quickly — which is why gopher netting sold for the job is woven to this specific dimension.

Measure the area in square feet. The galvanized roll covers 500 square feet and the stainless covers 400. Allow extra for the 3 inch overlap between adjacent runs, since coverage has to be continuous with no gaps.
Identical mesh and gauge, so both stop gophers equally well. Galvanized lasts 6–10+ years buried and costs less per square foot. Stainless lasts 25+ years. Under a lawn, where replacing the barrier means lifting established turf, the stainless is usually worth the difference.

Chicken wire is the wrong gauge and opening and corrodes quickly underground. Hardware cloth is generally too tight and restricts root growth. On a job where the excavation and sod cost far more than the mesh, saving money on the mesh is a false economy.
Yes — 100 per roll. They hold the wire flat against the soil while you backfill, and complete soil contact is what stops a gopher working along underneath it.
Not practically. Gopher wire is installed as part of a new lawn, bed or turf build, before the surface goes down. Retrofitting means lifting what is already there.
It is not designed for moles. Customers who have installed it for that purpose do report it deters them from tunnelling into the protected area, but we do not sell it as a mole barrier.
A gopher mound is a crescent or fan shape with the plug set off to one side. A mole mound is a symmetrical cone with the plug at the center.
