Gravel Stabilizer Grids

Confine The Gravel. Stop The Migration.

Loose aggregate spreads sideways under load and sinks into the subgrade. A stabilizer grid holds each pocket of stone in place, so the surface stays where you put it.

Gravel Stabilizer Grids For Driveways, Roads And Parking

Gravel stabilizer grids solve the problem every gravel surface eventually has. Loose aggregate has no lateral restraint, so under a wheel it shoves sideways and downward — ruts form in the tracks, berms build at the edges, potholes open up, and every year or two you top the whole thing up again. A grid gives the stone somewhere to be. Confined in a cell or a pocket, the aggregate can no longer migrate, and a loose layer starts behaving like a single stiff surface that spreads load rather than concentrating it.

Two consequences follow. The surface stops rutting and needs far less topping up, and because the confined layer distributes load properly you generally need less depth of base material than the same job would take in loose gravel — which often pays for the grid on the aggregate saving alone.

We stock two systems. Geocell panels expand into a honeycomb and come in depths from 3″ to 8″, so you match confinement depth to the load. Roll-form gravel pavers unroll across large areas fast, sit in a shallow profile, are plowable, and come in four colors so the paver disappears into the aggregate. The comparison below sets out which suits which job.

The Decision

Panel Geocell Or Roll-Form Paver?

Both confine aggregate so it cannot migrate. They differ in how deep the confinement goes and how quickly they install, and that is what should decide it.

Geocell panels

Expandable honeycomb, 3″ to 8″ deep

  • Depth is selectable. Match confinement depth to the load rather than accepting one profile.
  • Deeper cells carry more. The 6″ and 8″ depths suit heavy vehicles, machinery and access roads.
  • Works on slopes. Cell walls resist aggregate sliding downhill.
  • Cuts base depth. A confined layer spreads load, so less imported aggregate below.

Best for driveways and access roads carrying real weight, soft subgrade, slopes, and anywhere a deep confined layer is the point.

Roll-form gravel pavers

4′ × 150′ rolls, shallow profile

  • Fast over area. 577 sq ft per roll, unrolled rather than placed panel by panel.
  • Shallow profile. Sits close to the surface, so less excavation to begin with.
  • Plowable. A blade can clear it in winter without tearing the surface up.
  • Four colors. Black, gray, red and tan, so the paver reads as part of the aggregate.

Best for large residential driveways, paths and parking where the loads are cars and light trucks and install speed matters.

Both systems are available here. If you are unsure, the deciding questions are what is driving on it, how soft the ground underneath is, and whether the surface has to be plowed. Call (800) 524-4161 with those three and we will point you at the right one.

Choosing A Geocell Depth

With panel geocell, depth is the decision. Every depth uses the same material and installs the same way — a deeper cell simply confines more aggregate and spreads load across a wider footprint.

Cell-Tek runs to 6″; if you need 8″ the EnviroGrid EGA20-8 is the panel to specify. Both are virgin HDPE and install identically.

Where Stabilizer Grids Get Used

Gravel drivewaysThe most common job — stops rutting and annual topping up.
Parking areasCommercial and overflow parking on aggregate.
Access & haul roadsSite roads over ground that would otherwise rut out.
Slopes & embankmentsCell walls stop aggregate sliding downhill.
RV & trailer padsLong-term parking where load sits in one place.
Paths & walkwaysFirm, wheel-friendly gravel that does not scatter.
Yards & laydown areasStorage and equipment areas that must stay level.
Around outbuildingsBarn, stable and shed approaches that turn to mud.

How Confinement Works

Loose gravel fails because nothing stops it moving sideways. A wheel pushes down, the stone under it displaces outward, and the wheel sinks into the space left behind. Repeat that a few hundred times and you have a rut with berms either side.

A stabilizer grid removes the sideways escape route. Each cell or pocket holds its aggregate captive, so a load arriving at one point is carried by the confined mass around it rather than displacing it. The practical effects:

  • No more rutting or potholes in the wheel tracks
  • No migration of stone to the edges or into the subgrade
  • Less base depth needed, because the confined layer spreads load properly
  • Water still drains through — the surface stays permeable
  • Far less topping up, which is where the running cost goes

Installation In Outline

Both systems follow the same broad sequence. Full step-by-step instructions and downloads are on each product page.

  1. 1
    Excavate and grade

Strip to the required depth and grade the subgrade level. Because the confined layer carries load better, this is usually shallower than the same job in loose gravel.

  2. 2
    Lay separation fabric if required

On soft or fine-grained subgrade, a geotextile below keeps fines migrating up into the aggregate. The roll-form pavers have fabric bonded on already.

  3. 3
    Place and anchor the grid

Expand geocell panels and stake them; unroll roll-form pavers and stake at the specified spacing. Panels connect edge to edge for continuous coverage.

  4. 4
    Fill with aggregate

Spread stone into the cells, working from one side over material already placed rather than driving on bare grid. Fill each cell and slightly over-fill.

  5. 5
    Compact and top off

Compact the filled surface, then top off so a thin layer of aggregate covers the grid. Once covered, the grid is invisible and the surface reads as gravel.

Aggregate choice matters

Use angular crushed stone rather than rounded pea gravel wherever you can. Angular material interlocks and stays confined; rounded stone behaves like ball bearings and works its way loose regardless of what is holding it.

Gravel Stabilizer Grid FAQs

Should I use geocell panels or a roll-form paver?

Geocell panels where you need selectable depth — heavier vehicles, soft subgrade, slopes, or anywhere deep confinement is the point. Roll-form pavers where the loads are cars and light trucks, the area is large, install speed matters and the surface has to be plowable.

What geocell depth do I need?

3″ for light duty gravel, footpaths and garden access. 4″ is where most residential gravel drives land. 6″ for heavier vehicles, access roads and softer subgrade. 8″ for machinery and the worst ground conditions.

Do I still need base aggregate?

Usually yes, but less of it. The grid does not replace aggregate, it makes aggregate work harder by confining it. Because the confined layer spreads load properly, the same performance generally takes less depth than loose gravel would.

What kind of gravel should I use?

Angular crushed stone. Angular material interlocks and stays put once confined. Rounded pea gravel behaves like ball bearings and works loose regardless of what is holding it, so it is the wrong fill for any stabilizer system.

Will the grid be visible?

Not once it is filled and topped off. Both systems finish with a thin layer of aggregate over the grid so the surface reads as gravel. The roll-form pavers additionally come in four colors so any exposure blends with the stone.

Can I plow it in winter?

The NDS EZ Roll gravel pavers are plowable. With geocell, keep the blade high enough to clear the top of the cells — the grid sits below the finished surface, but a blade set low will find it.

Does water still drain through?

Yes. Both systems stay fully permeable, which is a large part of why they are specified over hard paving on driveways and parking areas.

How much do I need?

Work out the area in square feet and divide by the coverage per unit — 179.76 sq ft per EnviroGrid panel, 180 per Cell-Tek panel, 577 per EZ Roll. Add a little for cuts around edges and obstacles.

Will it work on a slope?

Geocell is the better choice on any real gradient, because the cell walls physically resist aggregate sliding downhill. Deeper cells hold more securely on steeper ground.

What does shipping cost?

Nothing. Shipping is free on every order, on all depths, colors and quantities.
