Gravel Grids for Driveways, Parking, and Access Roads

A gravel paver is a plastic cellular grid that confines loose stone so it can carry traffic without rutting, potholing, or washing out. NDS EZ Roll gravel pavers ship as 4′ × 150′ rolls with a continuous geotextile fabric bonded to the underside — the fabric holds the gravel fill and separates it from the soil below, while staying porous so stormwater filters straight through. Stakes are included with every roll.

Every order ships free. Choose from four colors to match your stone, and see the fill spec, install steps, and FAQ below to size your project.

Buyer's Guide

How Gravel Pavers Work

Loose gravel moves. Drive on it long enough and the stone spreads, tracks into the lawn, and settles into ruts and potholes that need regrading every season. A gravel paver — also called a gravel grid, gravel stabilizer, or driveway grid — solves that by confining the stone inside a plastic cellular structure. The cells stop lateral movement, so the gravel stays where you put it and the surface spreads vehicle loads instead of dishing under them.

NDS EZ Roll gravel pavers pair that grid with a continuous geotextile fabric bonded to the underside. The fabric does two jobs at once: it retains the gravel fill from below and separates it from the subsoil so fines can’t pump up and contaminate your stone. Because both layers stay porous, the finished surface is a genuinely permeable driveway — stormwater filters down through the profile rather than sheeting off. Empty cells carry a compressive strength of 57,890 psf, and the whole paver is molded from 100% recycled plastic.

Available in Four Colors

Match the paver to your stone so the grid disappears into the surface. All four colors share the same dimensions, strength, and fabric backing — only the appearance changes.

Common Applications

Residential drivewaysA stable gravel driveway that stops rutting and stone migration.
Gravel parking lotsPermeable overflow and long-term parking without asphalt.
RV & boat accessParking and approach pads that carry heavy, concentrated loads.
Fire lanes & emergency accessLoad-bearing access roads that stay pervious.
Paths & golf cart trailsJogging tracks, bike paths, and cart paths with firm footing.
Yards & wash-down areasTruck maintenance, equipment yards, and cart wash-down pads.
Slopes & swalesErosion control where fill would otherwise wash out.
Construction entrancesSoil stabilization at site entries and roadway shoulders.

Choosing the Right Gravel Fill

The fill matters as much as the grid. Use clean, washed gravel that is uniform in size and sized between 3/16″ and 3/8″. Angular stone is essential — the faces lock against each other and stay put, where rounded pea gravel behaves like ball bearings and migrates even inside a grid.

  • Clean and washed, free of fines
  • Uniform size, 3/16″ to 3/8″
  • Angular, not rounded
  • Fill flush with the top of the cells

How to Install Gravel Pavers

Installing a gravel driveway grid is a roll-out job once the base is right. The base carries the load; the paver keeps the surface stone where it belongs.

  1. 1
    Excavate and grade

Strip topsoil and soft material to the depth your traffic calls for, then grade for drainage.

  2. 2
    Build the gravel base

Place and compact an open-graded aggregate base in lifts. Heavier or repeated truck traffic needs a deeper base.

  3. 3
    Roll out the paver

Unroll the grid fabric-side down across the prepared base. Butt rolls together, cut to fit edges and curves, and secure with the included stakes.

  4. 4
    Fill the cells

Spread angular 3/16″–3/8″ washed gravel over the grid and work it in until the cells are full and the surface sits flush.

Gravel Paver FAQs

Do gravel grids actually work?

Yes, provided the base underneath is built correctly and you use the right stone. The grid’s job is lateral confinement — it stops the gravel from spreading, tracking, and forming ruts. Skip the compacted base or fill with rounded pea gravel and you’ll be disappointed; do both properly and the surface stays flat for years with far less regrading.

How much gravel do I need for a gravel grid?

Enough to fill the cells flush plus a thin surface layer. Cell depth on the EZ Roll paver is 1″, so plan on roughly one cubic yard of gravel per 250–300 ft² as a starting estimate, then confirm against your supplier’s yield. Order a little extra — the surface settles slightly after the first few weeks of traffic.

Can gravel grids be used on a slope?

Yes, and slopes are where they earn their keep. Confining the stone is what keeps it from washing downhill, which is why these pavers are also used for erosion control in swales and on graded banks. On steeper grades, stake more frequently and make sure water has somewhere to go at the bottom of the run.

Can you lay gravel grids directly on soil?

For foot traffic and very light use, laying over firm, well-drained soil can be acceptable. For anything carrying vehicles, no — you need a compacted aggregate base. Soft or wet subgrade will deform under load no matter how strong the grid is, and the surface will settle unevenly.

What size gravel should I use?

Clean, washed, uniformly sized stone between 3/16″ and 3/8″, and angular rather than rounded. Angular faces interlock and hold; round stone rolls and works its way out of the cells over time.

Are gravel pavers permeable?

Yes. Both the open cells and the bonded geotextile stay porous, so water infiltrates through the surface instead of running off. That makes gravel pavers a common choice for permeable driveway and parking requirements, though you should confirm the specifics with your local stormwater code before designing to a credit.

Do the rolls come with stakes?

Yes — stakes are included with every EZ Roll gravel paver roll.
