Geocell erosion control works by confinement rather than mass. A three-dimensional cellular system is laid over the face or subgrade and filled, and because each cell holds its fill in isolation, there is no continuous flow path for water to scour and no unconfined mass to slump. Erosion on a slope is a flow problem before it is a soil problem. Water gathers on an open face, concentrates into rills, and once it is moving it carries fill with it. A geocell interrupts that at the source: the face is divided into discrete cells, each holding its own fill, so there is no continuous path for water to concentrate along and no unconfined mass free to slump. The result is a stabilized face that can be vegetated, using fill you likely already have on site.
Typar GeoCell GS builds those cells from non-woven geotextile rather than solid plastic sheet, and that difference matters in two ways. The walls are permeable to water, air and nutrients, so confined fill drains rather than perching water behind an impermeable cell, and roots grow through the walls instead of stopping at them — which is why vegetative performance is better than with a sealed cell. The material is also lightweight and flexible, conforming to surface variations instead of bridging them, and it resists impact damage during placement.
The same geometry does a second job on flat ground. Filled cells transfer downward forces laterally, spreading a wheel load across a wider footprint and reducing the stress reaching weak subgrade — which is what allows a thinner constructed section over poor soils. You will also see the category called cellular confinement, geocell grid, geoweb or ground grid.
Every GS panel does both to some degree, but cell geometry decides which it does well. Small-diameter cells confine a smaller mass of fill each, so they hold a steeper face; deep cells create a thicker confined layer, so they carry a heavier load.
GS-250 · steep slopes
The steepest rating in the range at 1:1 (45°), in 4″ and 6″ depths. The narrower cell confines less fill per cell, which is exactly what holds a near-45° face. Both depths also carry pedestrian and light vehicle loads.
GS-350 · broad faces
Larger cells in 4″ and 6″ depths, rated to 1:2. Fewer cells per square foot means faster filling over large areas — the efficient pick for long embankments and landfill side slopes at moderate grade.

No specialist plant required. The critical detail is pinning — an expanded panel weighs almost nothing, and fill placed from the crest downward will drag an unpinned panel with it.
Grade and clear the face or subgrade. On a slope, cut an anchor trench at the crest so the top of the panel can be keyed in.
Panels arrive compacted and open out into the honeycomb formation to the shape and dimension the area needs.
Drive steel J-pins through the cells to hold the expanded panel against the surface before any fill goes in.
Butt and join panels across the area, keeping cells aligned so the finished fill sits level.
Place infill from the top of a slope working down, overfilling slightly so it settles flush. Topsoil and seed give a vegetated face.
Steel J-Pins come 100 to a pack. A slope application takes roughly 125 pins per panel; a flat load support application needs about 10 per panel — so a single slope panel is more than one pack on its own. Typar Steel J-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar geocell product and cannot ship alone.
Confinement is one approach to unstable ground. Depending on whether the priority is holding fill, reinforcing soil in tension, or retaining gravel at the surface, a different product may suit the job better.

Cell diameter in millimeters, then cell depth. GS-250/150 is a 250 mm (10″) diameter cell, 150 mm (6″) deep. GS-350/100 is 350 mm (13.8″) diameter, 100 mm (4″) deep.
The GS-250 series is rated to 1:1 (45°) and the GS-350 series to 1:2 — the smaller cell holds a steeper face because it confines less fill per cell. Depth follows the confined layer you want: 4″ for erosion control on a face, 6″ where there is also traffic or deeper fill. Confirm the design with your engineer for anything structural.
The GS-250 and GS-350 panels are 16.4′ × 23′, about 377 square feet each. GS-220/200 is 20′ × 10′, about 200 square feet.
Roughly 125 pins per panel for a slope application and about 10 per panel for a flat load support application. Pins come 100 to a pack, so a single slope panel takes more than one pack. Note that Typar Steel J-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar geocell product and cannot ship alone.
