Typar GeoCell GS · GS-250/150 · Code 124121

A 16.4′ × 23′ panel of Typar GeoCell GS — a three-dimensional cellular confinement system for geocell erosion control, rated for slopes up to 1:1 (45°) with light vehicle load support. The 10″ cells at 6″ deep give a thicker confined layer than the 4″ profile, for deeper fill or heavier traffic. Geotextile cell walls pass water, air and nutrients.

01 Typar GeoCell GS

Geocell Erosion Control And Load Support

Typar GeoCell GS is a three-dimensional cellular confinement system for geocell erosion control and load support, built from Typar geotextile rather than solid plastic sheet. Panels ship flat in compacted form and expand on site into a honeycomb of cells, which are then filled with soil, aggregate or topsoil and vegetated.

Because the cell walls are geotextile, they are permeable to water, air and nutrients — so the confined fill drains and roots can grow through, which improves both stability and vegetative performance compared with an impermeable cell. The material is lightweight and flexible, conforming to surface variations instead of bridging them, and it resists impact damage during install. A wide range of infill works, including native soils and recycled aggregates, which keeps haul-off and material costs down.

1:1slope protection — up to 45 degrees

Variable cell depths and diameters give cost-effective options from gentle embankments up to 45° faces.

02 Why it works

Confinement Instead Of Mass

On a slope, the cellular structure interrupts the flow paths that erode a face, holding fill in discrete cells so it cannot sheet away under hydraulic or mechanical stress. On flat ground the same geometry does something different: the cells transfer downward forces laterally, spreading a wheel load across a much wider footprint and reducing the stress reaching weak subgrade. That is what allows a thinner constructed profile over poor soils — less excavation, less imported aggregate, lower cost.

GeoCell GS Model Range

Two numbers name each model: cell diameter in millimeters, then cell depth. GS-250/150 is a 250 mm (10″) diameter cell, 150 mm (6″) deep. Smaller cells hold steeper faces; deeper cells carry heavier loads.

04 Slope protection

GeoCell GS For Erosion Control

The cellular structure improves resistance to erosive forces on steep or unstable slopes, and on faces exposed to severe hydraulic or mechanical stress. Variable cell depths and diameters make protection up to 1:1 (45°) practical without a structural wall.

  • Landfill caps and side slopes
  • Mining embankments and haul road batters
  • Highway cut and fill slopes
  • General embankments
  • Bridge abutments

05 Load support

GeoCell GS For Load Support

Filled cells transfer downward forces laterally, reducing the load reaching underlying soils. That makes the system a straightforward answer to soft or variable subgrade — and it also protects soil and roots from compaction where a surface has to cross a root zone.

  • Base course reduction
  • Improved access over poor soils
  • Increased pavement longevity
  • Highways and site access roads
  • Tree root protection
  • Light, heavy and industrial vehicle access

07 Where it goes

Where Geocell Erosion Control Is Used

Anywhere fill has to stay put on a grade, or a load has to cross ground that will not carry it.

Slope erosion control Landfill caps Mining sites Highway embankments Bridge abutments Channel and swale linings Access roads over soft soil Base course reduction Tree root protection Construction site access Parking and laydown areas Vegetated retaining faces
  • Lightweight and flexible — conforms to surface variations, easier to place than rigid panels.
  • Uses the fill you have — native soils and recycled aggregates cut waste and cost.
  • Vegetates well because the geotextile walls pass water, air and nutrients.

08 Installation

Five Steps To An Installed Panel

  1. Prepare the surface. Grade and clear the face or subgrade. On a slope, form an anchor trench at the crest so the top of the panel can be keyed in.
  2. Expand the panel. Panels arrive compacted and open out into the honeycomb formation to the shape and dimension you need on site.
  3. Pin it in place. Drive steel J-pins through the cells to hold the expanded panel against the surface before filling — this is what stops it walking downslope as fill goes in.
  4. Connect adjacent panels. Butt and join panels to cover the full area, keeping cells aligned so the fill sits level.
  5. Fill the cells. Place infill from the top of a slope working down, slightly overfilling so the surface settles flush. Vegetate with topsoil and seed where a green face is wanted.
Pin quantities matter more on a slope than anywhere else. A slope application takes roughly 125 pins per panel; a flat load-support application needs about 10 per panel. J-pins come 100 to a pack, so a single slope panel is more than one pack on its own.

13 Common questions

Geocell FAQs

What do the model numbers mean?
Cell diameter in millimeters, then cell depth. GS-250/150 is a 250 mm (10″) diameter cell, 150 mm (6″) deep. GS-350/100 is 350 mm (13.8″) diameter, 100 mm (4″) deep.
Which model do I need for my slope?
The GS-250 series is rated to 1:1 (45°) and the GS-350 series to 1:2 — smaller cells hold a steeper face because each cell confines a smaller mass of fill. Depth follows the confined layer you want: 4″ for erosion control on a face, 6″ where there is also traffic or deeper fill. Confirm the design with your engineer for anything structural.
How much area does a panel cover?
The GS-250 and GS-350 panels are 16.4′ × 23′, about 377 square feet each. GS-220/200 is 20′ × 10′, about 200 square feet.
How many J-pins do I need?
Roughly 125 pins per panel for a slope application and about 10 per panel for a flat load support application. Pins come 100 to a pack, so a single slope panel takes more than one pack. Note that Typar Steel J-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar geocell product and cannot ship alone.
What can I fill the cells with?
A wide range of infill works, including native soils, aggregates and recycled aggregates — which is often the biggest cost saving on the job, since it reduces both haul-off and imported material. Topsoil and seed give a vegetated face.
How is this different from a plastic geocell?
The cell walls are non-woven geotextile rather than solid plastic sheet, so they pass water, air and nutrients. Confined fill drains and roots can grow through the walls, which improves both stability and vegetative performance. The material is also lightweight and flexible, conforming to surface variations rather than bridging them.
Can it reduce my base course depth?
That is one of its main uses. Because the filled cells transfer downward forces laterally and reduce the stress reaching the subgrade, a confined section can achieve the same performance as a thicker unconfined base — less excavation and less imported aggregate. Have the section designed for your subgrade and traffic.
Do you carry other geocell series?
Yes — DT and DC series geocell is available alongside the GS panels listed here. Call (800) 524-4161 for information and pricing.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free on every order at Landscape Discount — geocell panels ship free with no minimum order.
