A retaining wall is not just the blocks. Beneath, behind and above every well-built wall there is a geotextile fabric layer managing water, stopping soil migration, and doing more for the wall's lifespan than any other few dollars you will spend on it. Fabric is the hidden half of the structure, and it is the part people leave out.
The job is simple to state: let water through, hold soil back. Without fabric, water washes fines out of the backfill and into your drainage stone. The stone clogs, the drain pipe blocks, hydrostatic pressure builds behind the wall face, and you get erosion, bulging or a lean. None of that is a block failure — it is a retaining wall drainage failure, and fabric is what prevents it.

Three positions, three different jobs. Most walls want all three, and each has its own fabric weight because filtration and separation are not the same problem.
Laid under the compacted gravel leveling pad, separating the pad from the sub-base. It stops subsoil fines migrating up into the base and weakening the footing, which increases the strength of the whole assembly. Available 4′ and 6′ wide on 50′ and 100′ rolls.
Support fabric sizes & pricing →Installed vertically between the drainage stone and the backfill soil. This is the one that does the most work: it keeps debris and soil out of the stone zone while letting water flow freely through to the drain. 3 oz, in 3′, 4′, 6′ and 8′ widths on 100′ rolls.
Filtration fabric sizes & pricing →Placed over the top layer of drainage aggregate before the topsoil goes back. It prevents soil migrating down into the stone from above and helps suppress weeds through the cap area, while still letting water escape. 4.5 oz, in 3′, 4′ and 6′ widths on 100′ rolls.

Geotextile is a woven or nonwoven material whose purpose is simple but critical: allow water to pass while keeping soil in place. It separates and filters, so the different layers of the wall — soil, gravel, drainage fill — stay intact and keep doing their own jobs without contaminating each other.

A clean drainage zone means pressure does not build up behind the wall face.
Used above the wall, it helps block weeds coming through the cap area.
Extends wall lifespan and reduces repairs and rebuilds. It is the least expensive part of the wall.
A homeowner built a small 4-foot wall with no fabric. Within two years water had washed soil into the gravel zone, clogging the drain pipe. The result was soggy soil behind the wall and a face that had begun to lean.
Backfill removed, and nonwoven geotextile installed beneath the base, behind the gravel and above the drainage zone. Clogged gravel replaced with clean angular stone, and a new drain pipe added, wrapped in fabric for extra filtration.
Wall stabilised and drainage restored, with standing water eliminated even in heavy rain. The owner avoided a full rebuild — which would have cost many times what the fabric would have cost on day one.
This is the ordinary failure mode, not an unlucky one. Nothing was wrong with the blocks in that wall.
Nonwoven geotextile is generally the better choice behind a wall, because its filtration performance is superior — it holds fines back while letting water through at a high rate. Woven fabric can be the better choice beneath the base, where separation strength matters more than filtration.
What you should not do is substitute weed barrier cloth. Landscape fabric is engineered to suppress weed germination, not to perform under a structural load in a drainage zone. It clogs, it tears, and it will not hold fines back under hydrostatic pressure. Use geotextile designed for retaining walls and soil separation.
A wall under about 4 feet may not need geogrid reinforcement, but fabric is always recommended regardless of height. Drainage does not care how tall the wall is — a 3-foot wall with a clogged stone zone fails the same way a 6-foot one does.

Yes. A wall under roughly 4 feet may not need geogrid reinforcement, but fabric is always recommended to protect the drainage zone and prevent erosion. Height determines whether you need reinforcement; it does not determine whether you need drainage.
No. Weed barrier cloth is not engineered for structural drainage applications. Always use geotextile designed for retaining walls and soil separation.
Support fabric goes below the base and separates the leveling pad from the sub-base. Filtration fabric at 3 oz goes vertically behind the wall between stone and soil. Separation fabric at 4.5 oz goes above the drainage stone under the topsoil. Different jobs, different weights.
For behind the wall, the width needs to cover the full height of the drainage zone plus enough to turn at top and bottom, so taller walls take wider rolls — which is why filtration goes up to 8′. Below and above the wall, width is driven by how far the layer extends back from the face.
No, and this is a common mix-up. Fabric manages water and separates layers. Geogrid is a lattice that reinforces the soil mass in tension and ties the wall into the earth behind it. Most reinforced walls need both, doing different jobs in different places.
It is common practice and adds a second stage of filtration at the point where clogging does the most damage. It was part of the remediation in the case study above.
