Geocell Ground Grids for Driveways, Parking, and Access Roads

A geocell grid is a three-dimensional honeycomb of HDPE cells that you lay on a prepared surface and fill with gravel, sand, soil or turf. Confining the fill is what stops it moving — loose aggregate spreads sideways under a wheel and dishes into ruts, while the same stone held inside a cell wall behaves like a semi-rigid slab and spreads the load across a much wider footprint.

EnviroGrid panels expand to 8.4′ × 21.4′ and cover 179.76 ft² each. All four share the same size, colour and material; only cell depth changes, and depth is what sets how much load the finished surface carries. How Geocell Ground Grids Work

Loose gravel moves. Drive on it long enough and the stone spreads, tracks into the lawn, and settles into ruts that need regrading every season. A geocell grid — also called a geo cell, ground grid, gravel grid or geo grid for gravel — fixes that by confining the fill inside a three-dimensional honeycomb of HDPE cell walls. The stone can no longer move away from the load, so the filled panel behaves as one semi-rigid mat instead of a loose layer.

That confinement does two things at once. It spreads a wheel load across a far wider footprint than the tyre’s contact patch, which means less pressure reaches the soil below and the system works over subgrades that would fail unconfined. And it lets you cut base material by up to 50% — with this range, the gravel base course comes out altogether. Grade, lay fabric, set the panel, fill. Because both the cells and the fill stay open, water infiltrates through the profile rather than sheeting off.

Every panel is 8.4′ × 21.4′, black, moulded from 100% virgin HDPE. Cell depth is the only variable, and it decides how much load the finished surface will carry.

Choosing the Right Gravel Fill

The fill carries the load, so it matters as much as the panel. Use clean, washed, well-graded aggregate and make sure it is angular rather than rounded. Angular faces lock against each other and stay in the cells; rounded pea gravel behaves like ball bearings and works its way out over time.

Fines are the quiet failure. They pack down, seal the surface, and remove the permeability you installed the system to get.

How to Install a Geocell Driveway

Five stages, no specialist plant, and no gravel base course. Panels arrive collapsed, expand on site, and are light enough to position by hand.

    Grade the subgrade

    Cut to the finished profile and compact. Set your falls now — drainage is easier to get right before anything goes down.

    Lay geotextile fabric

    Required across the whole area. It stops aggregate working down into the soil while still letting water through.

    Expand and position panels

    Open each panel out to 8.4′ × 21.4′ and butt it against the last, cutting to fit edges and curves.

    Join and anchor

    Zip ties link panel to panel into one continuous mat; J-hooks pin the assembly down so it cannot creep while you fill.

    Fill and compact

    Spread aggregate, work it into the cells, screed flush, then compact and add the wearing layer over the cell tops.

Fabric, Anchors and Ties

Two things go with every geocell order, and neither is optional if you want the surface to last.

Geotextile fabric is required. It sits between the soil and the grid and stops the fill absorbing into the ground. Without it the cells empty from the bottom and the panel begins to lift. We recommend heavy-duty 6 oz drainage fabric — note it comes 6′ wide, so plan on overlapping runs beneath the panels.

Panels need joining and anchoring. EnviroLock zip ties link panel to panel into a continuous mat, and J-hooks hold the assembly against the subgrade while you fill — 18″ for the shallower cells, 24″ for the deeper panels and softer ground.

Slopes, Soil and Drainage

On a slope, geocell earns its keep. Unconfined aggregate migrates downhill with every rainfall and every vehicle pass; the cell walls hold each pocket of stone where it was laid. Anchor more frequently on steeper grades and make sure water has somewhere to go at the bottom of the run.

Over soil is the normal installation for this range — graded, compacted subgrade with fabric between the soil and the grid. What you should not do is skip the fabric.

On poor-draining ground, the system performs best where the subsoil actually infiltrates water. Over heavy clay or a high water table, plan an underdrain rather than relying on infiltration alone.

Geocell Gravel Grid FAQs

Do geocell gravel grids actually work?

Yes, and the mechanism is simple. Loose aggregate fails because it can move sideways away from a load. Confine it in a cell and it cannot, so the filled panel acts as a semi-rigid mat rather than a loose layer. Use angular stone and lay the fabric, and the surface stays flat for years with far less regrading.

Are geocell grids worth it?

Compare the whole build rather than the panel price. Because confinement lets you cut base material by up to half — and removes the gravel base course entirely with this range — you buy less rock and move less spoil. Set against years of raking, topping up and regrading a plain gravel drive, the grid usually pays for itself in a few seasons.

Which cell depth do I need?

3″ for cars, golf carts and ATVs. 4″ for most driveways and parking lots, which is where the majority of projects land. 6″ for emergency access and surfaces heavy vehicles use regularly. 8″ for heavy machinery and specialty duty. The depth cards above give the load rating for each.

How much gravel do I need?

Work it in two parts. For the cells, multiply your area by the cell depth — a 4″ panel over 500 ft² needs about 167 cubic feet, or roughly 6.2 cubic yards. Then add a wearing layer of 1″ to 2″ over the same area. Order 5–10% over, since aggregate compacts into the cells as you work it in.

What size gravel goes in a geocell grid?

Clean, washed, well-graded and angular. Angular faces interlock and stay in the cells; rounded stone rolls and migrates out over time. Avoid material with a lot of fines, which packs down and seals the surface.

Can geocell grids be used on a slope?

Yes, and slope work is one of the strongest cases for cellular confinement. The cell walls hold each pocket of fill in place instead of letting it wash downhill. Anchor more frequently on steeper grades, and make sure water has an outlet at the bottom of the run.

Can you lay a geocell grid directly on soil?

Yes — that is the normal installation for this range, over graded and compacted subgrade with geotextile between the soil and the grid. The fabric is not optional. Without it the aggregate migrates into the soil, the cells empty from the bottom, and the panel starts to lift.

Do I need a gravel base under the grid?

Not with this range. The cell depth and the compaction that happens inside the confined cells do that work, which is where the material and labour saving comes from. You do still need the geotextile layer beneath, and a wearing layer above.

Will the grid show through the gravel?

No, provided you allow a wearing layer over the cell tops. Fill flush with the cells, then add a further inch or two across the surface, and the panel disappears.

What is the difference between geocell and geogrid?

Geocell is three-dimensional — a honeycomb that confines fill vertically as well as laterally. Geogrid is a flat two-dimensional mesh that reinforces by friction and interlock. To hold a gravel surface in place, geocell is what you want; geogrid is a base reinforcement layer.

How long do geocell grids last?

These panels are moulded from 100% virgin HDPE resin in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility and carry a ten-year material warranty. Buried under aggregate and out of direct UV, service life runs well beyond that.
