Grass Protection Mesh For Parking, Access Routes And Paths
Grass protection mesh is a rolled polymer grid laid straight onto an existing lawn and pinned down with turf staples. Grass grows up through the apertures and roots around the mesh filaments, and that combination — grid plus root mass — spreads wheel and footfall loads across the surface instead of letting them punch down into soft ground. The area keeps looking like a lawn, and it stops turning into mud.
What it is not is a paving system. There is no excavation, no imported base, no compaction and nothing to dispose of. That is the whole appeal: a weekend job on an existing surface that costs a fraction of converting the same area to asphalt or concrete, and mows normally once established.

The Four Grades, Weakest To Strongest
Every grade is 6.7 feet wide and installs the same way. What separates them is how much traffic the area takes, and how often. Note that coverage per roll runs in the opposite direction to strength — the strongest grade is not the biggest roll, so comparing on roll size alone will point you the wrong way.

Mesh Or Grass Pavers?
Both spread loads so turf does not rut, sink or turn to mud. They are not interchangeable, and the difference is how much ground work you are prepared to do.
Choose mesh if…
- You want a fast install with minimal base work
- Loads are pedestrians, carts and cars or light trucks
- You want a green, natural look year round
- You would rather not excavate or import aggregate
Choose grass pavers if…
- Regular heavy vehicles or frequent turning loads are expected
- The site needs high bearing capacity and tight surface performance
- You can budget for excavation, base aggregate and compaction
- You are protecting a fire access lane or similar
Some mesh installations also want additional soil stabilization underneath, particularly on soft subgrade — that is a job for geogrid below the mesh.
How It Goes In
The sequence is short and needs no specialist equipment. Every grade installs the same way, and the details below are what separate an installation that holds from one that lifts.
- Cut the grass short and level the area. Clear protruding stones and debris, and fill hollows with fine topsoil and sharp sand.
- Roll out under tension. Slack mesh moves under load. Keep it in contact with the ground the whole way.
- Butt the edges, never overlap. Adjacent rolls meet edge to edge and get pinned across the joint.
- Staple thoroughly. Along every edge and joint, with extra at entrances and anywhere vehicles turn.
- Keep traffic off while it establishes. The grass needs to grow through and be mowed before the surface reaches full strength.

Before the grass establishes
Mesh is slip resistant, not slip proof. Until the turf has grown through and knitted in, a wet mesh surface can be slippery — take particular care with pedestrians in spiked footwear such as cleats or golf shoes. Once the grass is established the grass surface governs.

Which grade do I need?
Judge it on frequency rather than vehicle weight. Standard grade for lightweight vehicles and heavy foot traffic. Reinforced for areas driven or parked on frequently. Heavy grade where loads are higher and wet grip matters. The GP-Flex 1800 is the strongest, for frequently travelled areas needing genuine ground reinforcement.
Does the strongest grade come on the biggest roll?
No, and this catches people out. Coverage runs opposite to strength: standard grade gives 670 sq ft per roll while heavy grade gives 167.5. Choose the grade for the traffic first, then work out how many rolls the area needs.
Does it need to be buried?
No. Every grade is laid on the surface of an existing lawn and pinned down with turf staples. There is no excavation, no imported base and nothing to dispose of. Cut the grass short first so the mesh sits close to the root zone.
Will the grass grow through it?
Yes, and that is how it works. Turf roots through the apertures and knits around the mesh filaments, and the grid plus root mass together distribute the load. Once established the mesh is largely invisible and the area mows normally.
Can I mow over it?
Once the grass has grown through and the mesh is stapled flat, yes. Make sure no bumps or lifted areas remain after stapling, and set the mower height so the blade is not catching the mesh.
Is it slippery?
Slip resistant, not slip proof. Before the grass establishes a wet mesh surface can be slippery, so take care with pedestrians in spiked footwear. The GP-Flex 1800 is the only grade with slip resistance tested to a standard, BS7976-2.
Will it fix a boggy area?
No. Grass protection mesh does not solve drainage problems. Over clay soil, install drainage first. If the ground is particularly soft, seek professional advice before laying mesh over it — and consider a geogrid beneath for soil stabilization.

Mesh for a fast install with minimal base work, where loads are pedestrians, carts and cars or light trucks, and you want a green look. Grass pavers where regular heavy vehicles or frequent turning loads are expected and you can budget for excavation, base aggregate and compaction.
Do I need staples?
Yes, on every grade. They hold the mesh flat and under tension against the grass, and full ground contact is what stops it moving under load. Sold separately in cartons of 500.
