Porous Paving For Grass Or Gravel
One interlocking grid, two finished surfaces. Fill the cells with gravel for stone, or with rootzone for natural turf — and carry vehicle loads either way.
Choose Your Fill
Typar BodPave 85 is a ground reinforcement paving grid that serves as both gravel pavers and grass pavers — the same 19.7″ square unit, filled differently. The pavers snap together into a continuous mat strong enough to carry heavy vehicle loads, then take angular gravel for a stone surface or topsoil and rootzone for natural turf. Because the grid stays open, rainwater enters the ground where it falls instead of running off, which is what puts BodPave 85 into LID and NPDES stormwater specifications.
Landscape Discount stocks both colors by the pallet — 180 pavers covering 484 square feet — plus the white snap-in bay markers for laying out parking spaces. Every order ships free. The comparison below covers grass fill against gravel fill, and the FAQ answers the base-prep questions that come up most.

BodPave 85 is a paving grid, not a paver in the masonry sense. Each 19.7″ square unit snap-fits to its neighbors, so the finished surface behaves as one continuous mat rather than a field of loose tiles, and integral ground anchor spikes extend 1.37″ below the base to resist lateral movement. The cells then confine whatever fill you put in them — gravel or rootzone — so the surface material cannot migrate into ruts under traffic.
That combination is what gives a load bearing capacity of up to 367 tons per square yard while leaving the surface fully open. Rainwater enters the ground where it falls, reducing runoff and recharging groundwater, which is why porous paving grids appear in LID and NPDES stormwater specifications where a conventional slab would not be permitted or would need attenuation elsewhere on the site.
You will also see this category called porous pavers, permeable pavers, paving grids, grass block or turf block. BodPave 85 is manufactured from UV-stabilized 100% recycled HDPE, is chemically inert and non-toxic, fully recyclable, and made in the USA.
The grid is identical in both cases. What goes in the cells decides how the surface looks, how soon you can use it, and how you maintain it. Color choice follows the fill: green disappears into turf, black disappears under stone.
Green · grass fill
Fill the cells with topsoil and rootzone, then seed or sod. Once established the grass reads as lawn and the grid is effectively invisible, so the area stays green space that happens to carry traffic.
Black · gravel fill
Fill the cells with angular gravel for a clean stone surface that is usable the moment it is filled — no establishment period, no mowing, and the grid sits below the stone out of sight.
| Spec | Grass fill | Gravel fill |
|---|---|---|
| Finished look | Natural lawn, grid hidden in the turf | Clean stone, grid below the surface |
| Fill material | Topsoil and rootzone, seeded or sodded | Angular gravel, typically 3/8″ to 3/4″ |
| Ready to use | After the grass establishes | Immediately once filled |
| Maintenance | Mow and water as normal | Top up cells occasionally, no mowing |
| Suggested color | Green | Black |
| Permeability | Fully permeable | Fully permeable |
The grid confines the surface; the base underneath carries the load. Depth follows the heaviest vehicle that will use the area, so a footpath and a fire lane are very different builds.
Strip soft topsoil and dig to the depth your load calls for. This is where the load capacity is won or lost.
Place open-graded aggregate and compact it in lifts. The pavers do not substitute for a base.
A thin sharp sand or grit blinding gives the pavers a level bed and seats the anchor spikes.
Connect the units, offsetting rows by one cell for extra stability, and cut to fit at edges and curves.
Angular gravel for stone, or topsoil and rootzone seeded or sodded for grass. Overfill slightly and let it settle.
Paint does not survive on grass or gravel, so bay markings snap into the paver cells instead. White HDPE markers form bay lines, L-shapes, T-shapes, squares, T-junctions and access road center lines, and come 100 to a case. Bodpave 85 parking space markers must be ordered with an accompanying Typar Bodpave 85 order and cannot ship alone.
BodPave 85 is one of several permeable paving systems we stock. If you need a different format — flexible rolls for large areas, a shallower rigid grid, or a gravel-specific product — the wider selections are worth comparing before you order a pallet.
The full grass paver range, including NDS EZ Roll flexible rolls for covering large areas quickly and Tufftrack rigid grids for high-turn traffic.
Systems built specifically for gravel retention — the option to compare when the finished surface will be stone rather than turf.
Geogrid-based stabilization for driveways and access roads where the priority is load support under the aggregate.

A pallet holds 180 pavers covering 484 square feet. Each paver is 19.7″ square, 1.97″ deep, and covers 2.69 ft².
Load bearing capacity runs up to 367 tons per square yard. In practice the sub-base you build under the grid matters as much as the grid itself, so match your excavation and aggregate depth to the heaviest vehicle that will use the surface.
Only visually. Green suits a grass fill, blending with the turf before growth fills in; black suits a gravel fill, disappearing under the stone. The pavers are otherwise identical.
Yes — the same grid does both. Angular gravel gives a surface usable as soon as it is filled, while topsoil and rootzone seeded or sodded gives natural grass once established. Both remain fully permeable.
For anything carrying vehicles, yes. A compacted open-graded sub-base carries the load and keeps the surface from settling, with a thin sand or grit bedding layer to set the pavers on. The paver confines the fill rather than replacing the base.
Two ways. They snap-fit to each other so the surface acts as one continuous mat, and each paver has integral ground anchor spikes extending 1.37″ below its base to resist lateral movement. Rows can be offset by one cell for extra stability.
The pavers are manufactured in accordance with LID and NPDES guidelines for water management, and porous paving is widely accepted for reducing runoff and recharging groundwater. Confirm the specifics with your local authority before designing to a credit.
With the white snap-in bay markers, which fit directly into the paver cells and form bay lines, L-shapes, T-shapes, squares, T-junctions and center lines. They come 100 to a case, and note that they must be ordered with an accompanying Typar BodPave 85 order and cannot ship alone.
