01 Typar BodPave 85

Porous Paving Grids For Grass Or Gravel Surfaces

BodPave 85 is a ground reinforcement paving grid that works as both gravel pavers and grass pavers — the same grid, filled differently. The pavers inter-connect with each other to form a very strong, stable surface capable of carrying heavy vehicle loads, then get filled with gravel for a stone finish or with soil and rootzone for a natural grass surface.

It is a straightforward answer to worn or rutted ground that still has to drain. Water enters the ground where it falls rather than sheeting off to a drain, which is what puts BodPave 85 in LID and NPDES stormwater specifications. Sold by the pallet: 180 pavers covering 484 square feet, in green or black, made in the USA from 100% recycled HDPE.

02 Why it works

Interlocked, Anchored, And Free Draining

Each 19.7″ square paver snap-fits to its neighbors, so the finished surface behaves as one continuous mat instead of a field of loose tiles. Integral ground anchor spikes extend 1.37″ below the base of the paver to resist lateral movement, and the cells hold the fill in place so it cannot migrate into ruts. Because the grid is open, the surface drains freely into the natural sub-grade, reducing stormwater runoff and recharging groundwater.

Both surfaces are permeable. The choice is aesthetic and operational rather than hydrological — grass and gravel fills both let rainwater enter the ground where it falls.

07 Installation

Five Steps To A Reinforced Surface

  1. Excavate to the design depth. Depth follows the load: a footpath needs far less than a fire lane or a bus park.
  2. Build and compact the sub-base. This layer carries the load. Compact in lifts — the pavers confine the surface, they do not substitute for a base.
  3. Screed a bedding layer. A thin sharp sand or grit blinding gives the pavers a level bed to sit on.
  4. Lay and connect the pavers. Snap the units together, offsetting rows by one cell where you want extra stability, and press the anchor spikes into the bedding. Cut to fit at edges.
  5. Fill the cells. Angular gravel for a stone finish, or topsoil and rootzone seeded or sodded for grass. Overfill slightly and let it settle.

Typar publishes separate guidance for reduced-dig, gravel-surface and grass-seed installations — worth matching the guide to your build before you order aggregate.

With a grass fill, plan for establishment. Keep traffic off until the grass has rooted through the cells. Driving on new seed compacts the rootzone and sets the surface back.

08 Laying out bays

Add Parking Space Markers

On a parking application you need lines, and paint does not work on grass or gravel. BodPave 85 bay markers snap-fit directly into the paver cells in white HDPE, and they can be arranged into bay lines, L-shapes, T-shapes, squares, T-junctions and access road center lines — even cut down to make smaller square markers. Supplied 100 to a case.

How much area does a pallet cover?
A pallet holds 180 pavers covering 484 square feet. Each paver is 19.7″ square and covers 2.69 ft².
How much weight will it carry?
Load bearing capacity runs up to 367 tons per square yard. In practice the base you build under the grid matters as much as the grid itself, so match your excavation and sub-base depth to the heaviest vehicle that will use the surface.
Green or black — does it matter?
Only visually. Green suits a grass fill, where the grid blends with the turf before growth fills in. Black suits a gravel fill, disappearing under the stone. The pavers are otherwise identical.
Can I fill it with gravel instead of grass?
Yes — the same grid does both. Angular gravel gives a stone surface that is usable as soon as it is filled, while topsoil and rootzone seeded or sodded gives a natural grass surface once established. Both remain fully permeable.
Do I need a base underneath?
For anything carrying vehicles, yes. A compacted sub-base carries the load and keeps the surface from settling, with a thin sand or grit bedding layer to set the pavers on. The paver confines the fill rather than replacing the base.
How do the pavers stay in place?
Two ways. They snap-fit to each other, so the surface acts as one continuous mat, and each paver has integral ground anchor spikes extending 1.37″ below its base to resist lateral movement. Rows can also be offset by one cell for extra stability.
Is it permeable enough for stormwater credit?
