What Is a Tree Root Barrier?

A tree root barrier is installed vertically in a trench between a tree and something you do not want its roots reaching — a sidewalk, driveway, foundation, kerb line, pipe or utility run. It is not there to kill roots. It is there to change where they go. Left alone, roots follow the easiest route for air and water, which is very often the loose backfill directly under a slab. A structural root thickening in that gap is what lifts pavement, cracks concrete and creates the trip hazard you end up paying to fix.

Root barriers are also searched for as root blocking panels, root barriers for trees, root guard, plastic root barrier, copper root barrier or root control fabric. Those names describe four genuinely different products, and the differences matter more than the naming does. One is a ribbed rigid panel, one is a continuous sheet of HDPE, one is a porous fabric carrying a herbicide, and one is a copper sheet encapsulated in geotextile that stops roots chemically without a herbicide. Below is what each is good at, what each is bad at, and which situations point clearly at one of them.

Root Barrier Panels

Rigid 2′ molded panels that clip together, with raised 90° ribs on the face. The ribs are the point — they actively steer roots downward rather than just blocking them.

Strengths

  • Vertical ribs actively direct roots down, which no other type does
  • The best choice in tight spaces — concrete cutouts, medians, close to the trunk
  • Rigid, so it holds a plumb line in the trench on its own
  • Modular in 2′ increments — arcs, rings and straight runs from one product
  • Five depths from 12″ to 48″

Weaknesses

  • A joint every 2 feet, and joints are where roots find a way through
  • Forcing an assembly into a tight circle puts load on those joints
  • Thickness varies depending where on the panel you measure
  • More pieces to carry, align and inspect on a long run

Choose it when the barrier sits close to the trunk or inside a confined cutout, and the tree needs its roots driven downward for stability.

HDPE Root Barrier Roll

A single sheet of 80 mil HDPE on a 100-foot roll. No ribs, no clips, and on most jobs no joints at all — which is the whole argument for it.

Strengths

  • One continuous length — 49 fewer joints per 100 ft than a panel run
  • Full 80 mil, the same gauge across the entire sheet
  • Follows curves and full circles without stressing any connection
  • Doubles as a water barrier when run against a foundation
  • Rated for up to 100 years in the ground

Weaknesses

  • No vertical ribs, so it deflects roots rather than steering them down
  • Wrong pick in a tight cutout hard against the trunk
  • Flexible, so backfilling needs care to keep it plumb
  • The deep rolls are heavy and awkward to handle single-handed

Choose it when you are running a perimeter outside the canopy — a property line, fence, foundation or long sidewalk — and want the fewest possible seams.

BioBarrier Root Control Fabric

A porous geotextile carrying time-release nodules of Trifluralin. It creates a treated “no root” zone in the soil either side of the fabric — root tips entering it stop dividing and grow elsewhere.

Strengths

  • Protection is a zone, not a surface — a root does not have to touch it
  • Porous, so water, air and nutrients still pass through
  • Flexible: vertical, horizontal or wrapped as a surround
  • The only type that works under a pot, stopping roots escaping drain holes
  • Shapes to an irregular excavation and wraps around pipes

Weaknesses

  • Herbicide-based, so it has a finite life — 15 years, not a century
  • Potency depends on storage; heat and sun degrade it before install
  • Some sites, specs and jurisdictions will not accept a herbicide
  • Higher cost per linear foot than a physical barrier

Choose it when the shape is awkward — around a pipe, over a septic field, under a container — or when a physical wall simply cannot be placed where you need protection.

Copper Composite Root Barrier

A copper sheet mechanically encapsulated between two high-strength geotextiles. It releases Cu2+ ions to create a zone of inhibition in the soil — root tips entering it collapse about 1.5 cm short of the sheet, so they never reach it.

Strengths

  • Roots stop before contact, so the sheet is never probed for weaknesses
  • Gets stronger with time as Cu2+ ions diffuse into the soil
  • Independently assessed at Leeds, including against Japanese Knotweed
  • Permeable, so water, air and nutrients still pass through
  • No herbicide, and the effect stays local to the barrier

Weaknesses

  • The highest cost per linear foot of the four
  • One width only — 3.9′, so it cannot go deeper than that
  • 82′ rolls, so a long run still needs a lapped joint
  • Chemically active, so some specifications will still query it

Choose it when you are containing an aggressive invasive such as Japanese Knotweed, or protecting a foundation or buried service where deterring roots matters more than deflecting them.

Sizing

How Deep Should a Root Barrier Be?

Depth is the decision that decides whether the barrier works at all, because one a root can travel under does nothing. There is no universal number — root depth varies with the species, the soil, the climate and how much rain the site gets. The same tree roots very differently in sand than in heavy clay.

  • Light-duty paving, gentle species — 12″ to 18″
  • Standard sidewalk and street tree work — 24″
  • Roadways, structural paving, vigorous species — 36″
  • Deep utilities, the most aggressive species — 48″ and up

Depth also narrows the choice of type. Panels reach 48″, HDPE roll reaches 48″, BioBarrier goes to 58.5″ wide, and copper composite is a single 3.9′ width — so a run deeper than about 4 feet rules copper out before anything else is considered.

If you do not know how deep your tree's roots run, dig an exploratory hole and look, or have an ISA-certified arborist assess the site. Guessing shallow is the expensive mistake — and remember the trench, not the barrier, is what costs money on a deep install.

Installation

Root Barrier Installation Basics

All four types share the same broad sequence. The differences are in how pieces join and how deep the trench goes.

    Mark the run and check utilities

    Set the line between the tree and whatever you are protecting, and confirm clearances before breaking ground.

    Trench, keeping the wall plumb

    Panels and rolls go in 1–2″ shallower than the barrier so the top edge stays visible — that lets you spot and clip a surface root trying to cross over.

  3. 3
    Set the barrier, correct face toward the tree

    Panels: ribs facing the tree. HDPE: chrome-rolled side facing the tree. BioBarrier: nodule side per the design detail. Copper composite: oriented per its installation guidance — the geotextile is symmetrical, but the run still needs to sit between the roots and what you are protecting.

    Join it properly

    Panels zip together. HDPE overlaps 4 feet and gets taped both faces. BioBarrier joins with the sod pins supplied or construction adhesive. Copper composite laps at joints, and because the zone of inhibition extends beyond the sheet itself, a lapped joint is less vulnerable than on a purely physical barrier.

    Backfill in lifts and inspect

    Keep the barrier vertical as you go, then check the finished run for gaps, flipped sections or reversed pieces.

What is the best root barrier?

There is no single best one, which is why there are four types here. Panels win in tight cutouts close to the trunk because their ribs steer roots downward. HDPE roll wins on long perimeter runs because it has almost no seams. BioBarrier wins where the shape is awkward — around pipes, over drain fields, under containers. Copper composite wins against aggressive invasives, because roots stop short of the sheet rather than pressing against it. Match the type to where the barrier sits and what you are holding back.

Do root barriers actually work?

Yes, when they are deep enough and continuous. Barriers fail in two ways: a root travels under one that is too shallow, or it finds a way through a joint. Get the depth right for the species and keep the run unbroken and they work as intended for decades.

What are the types of root barriers?

Four. Mechanical ribbed panels, which deflect roots downward. Continuous HDPE sheet, which blocks them with an unbroken wall. Chemical root control fabric, which creates a treated zone in the soil that stops root tips dividing. And copper composite, which releases copper ions to create a zone of inhibition roots will not enter. Each is covered above with its strengths and weaknesses.

How deep does a root barrier need to be?

It depends on species, soil, climate and rainfall. As a starting point: 12–18″ for light paving and gentle species, 24″ for standard sidewalk and street tree work, 36″ for roadways and vigorous species, 48″ and beyond for deep utilities. Dig an exploratory hole or ask an arborist if you are unsure.

Will a root barrier kill my tree?

No. Physical barriers redirect roots rather than severing them, and BioBarrier's herbicide is non-systemic — it acts on root tips inside the treated zone and is not translocated through the plant. Copper composite is similar in principle: the copper affects only root tips that enter the zone of inhibition, and testing showed no negative effect on the biomass of surrounding plants. When retrofitting near an established tree, pair the barrier with selective root pruning by an ISA-certified arborist.

How is copper composite different from BioBarrier?

Both create a zone in the soil rather than relying on a surface, but the active agent differs. BioBarrier carries time-release Trifluralin, a herbicide, and is guaranteed for 15 years. Copper composite uses no herbicide — it releases copper ions, and its effect strengthens over time as those ions diffuse rather than depleting. BioBarrier comes in more widths and lays flat under containers; copper composite is the pick for aggressive invasives and for sites where a herbicide is not acceptable.

How much does a root barrier cost?

Cost per linear foot rises with depth, and the two chemical types cost more per foot than the physical barriers — copper composite most of all. But on almost every job the trenching costs more than the barrier, which is why choosing the right type and depth first time matters far more than shaving the material price.

Can landscape fabric or weed barrier stop tree roots?

No. Woven and non-woven landscape fabrics are made to suppress weed germination, not to resist a structural root. Roots grow through, around and under them. Redirecting a tree root needs a rigid deflecting profile, a solid HDPE sheet, a treated root control fabric, or a copper composite.

Which way does the barrier face?

Toward the tree, on every type. Panels present their ribs to the roots, HDPE presents its chrome-rolled face, BioBarrier is oriented per the design detail, and copper composite goes in per its installation guidance. The functional surface has to meet the roots first.

Can I install a root barrier myself?

Yes on all four, given a trench. None needs specialist plant or heat welding — panels clip, HDPE cuts with a utility knife and joins with tape, BioBarrier cuts to size and pins together, and copper composite cuts and laps like a geotextile. The digging is the hard part, and on deep runs it is worth hiring a trencher.

Can roots grow over the top of a barrier?

They can try, which is why panels have a doubled top edge and why HDPE is set with its top edge standing proud of the soil — a visible edge lets you spot and clip a surface root before it crosses. On higher-risk sites, a deeper barrier gives more margin.
