Point-bonded polyspun fabric at 3 oz, light enough to let water, air and nutrients through to the root zone while blocking the light weeds need to start. Seven roll sizes, 200 to 3,600 sq ft.

Landscape Fabric

Standard Grade Weed Barrier

Standard grade weed barrier is a polyspun landscape fabric: fine polypropylene fibers laid down in random directions and bonded together with heat. That leaves tiny gaps between the fibers, so the fabric drains and breathes instead of sealing the bed. Water soaks through to the roots, air and nutrients reach the soil, and you avoid the runoff and sour soil you get under plastic sheeting.

It stops weeds by blocking light. Seeds in the soil need light to get going, and the fabric cuts it off at the surface — and because the fibers run in every direction, there is no consistent gap for a shoot to push through. How well it holds up comes down to fabric weight. At 3 oz this is the lighter grade, which is why it suits beds rather than hard-working areas.

If weeds are the main problem you are solving, buy heavy grade instead. Standard grade is the right call for ornamental beds with modest weed pressure, temporary plantings, or a job small enough that the 200 sq ft roll is the sensible buy.

Standard Grade Weed Barrier Questions

Standard or heavy grade?

For most people, heavy grade. On weed-control effectiveness a 3 oz polyspun sits around the middle of the scale and the 5 oz hybrid at the top, and the gap is far larger than the price difference. Standard suits light-duty beds, temporary plantings, or very small jobs.

How much do I need?

Seven rolls from 200 up to 3,600 sq ft. Allow extra for the 4″–6″ overlap where runs meet.

Why polyspun rather than woven?

Polyspun is fine yarn laid in random patterns and point bonded, so there is no repeating weave for weed roots to probe through over time.

Does water get through it?

Yes. Nutrients, water and air all pass through, which promotes plant health while weed growth is minimized.
