Weed Barrier Fabric — Standard Grade

Contractor-grade polyspun weed barrier fabric, and an ideal material for controlling weeds in landscapes and flower gardens. By allowing nutrients, water and air to pass through, it promotes plant health while minimizing weed growth — which is exactly what plastic sheeting cannot do.

Polyspun fabric is composed of an extruded fine denier continuous yarn laid in random patterns. Point bonding and compressing that web is what creates a strong, versatile barrier — and because there is no weave, there are no regular gaps for weed roots to find.

02 Why random beats woven

No Weave Means No Gaps

A woven fabric is a grid, and over time weed roots probe through the openings in that grid. Polyspun is fine fibers laid in random patterns and bonded together — there is no repeating opening to find, which is what makes a contractor-grade nonwoven a more reliable weed barrier than a cheap woven at the same weight.

Permeability is the point. Plastic sheeting stops weeds and everything else, which starves the soil beneath it. A fabric barrier lets water and air keep reaching the roots, so the plants you want carry on while the ones you do not are denied the light to germinate.

Match the width to the bed. Laying a bed in one pass avoids a seam running down the middle of it, and a seam is where weeds eventually appear. Where you do need two runs, allow the 4″–6″ overlap.

Standard Or Heavy Grade?

Two grades, and for most people the answer is the heavier one. Here is the honest comparison.

06 Read this before you order

If Weeds Are The Problem, Buy Heavy Grade

We would rather tell you this now than have you relay a bed in three years. Ranked on weed-control effectiveness, a 3 oz polyspun like this one sits around the middle of the scale. The hybrid sits at the top of it — and the gap between them is much larger than the difference in price.

That is because it is not simply a heavier version of the same thing. Bonding a woven layer to a non-woven one gives strength and permeability at once, adds a textured face that holds mulch in place, and puts 12″ planting stripes on the working side. For most beds with a genuine weed problem, it is the fabric to buy.

A mulched bed is the natural home for this fabric. It is light enough to work with easily, permeable enough to keep the planting healthy, and strong enough to last under a proper 3–4 inch mulch layer.

08 Installation

Three Steps

  1. Prepare the area. Remove all weeds and plants from the desired area. For increased protection, consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide before laying the weed barrier fabric down.
  2. Lay, cut and pin. Unroll and cut the fabric to the appropriate length. If overlapping, allow a 4″–6″ overlap. Cut an X slit in the location where each plant will be placed. Secure the fabric with fabric staples, staggering them at an approximate rate of one staple per 5 feet.
  3. Cover it. Cover the fabric with 3–4 inches of bark, mulch or stone to protect it from ultraviolet light and to give the project a finished look.
The pre-emergent step is worth the extra half hour. Fabric stops what tries to grow up through it; a pre-emergent stops seeds already in the soil from starting at all. Together they are considerably more effective than either alone.

The install calls for staples staggered at roughly one per 5 feet, along every edge, at every overlap and anywhere the fabric lifts. That is what holds it flat against the soil while you spread mulch across it.

Standard Grade Weed Barrier FAQs

How much fabric do I need?
Work out the bed area in square feet and match it to a roll — 200, 400, 600, 1,200, 1,800 or 2,400 sq ft. Allow extra for the 4″–6″ overlap where runs meet.
Standard or heavy grade?
For most people, heavy grade. Ranked on weed-control effectiveness a 3 oz polyspun sits around the middle of the scale and the 5 oz hybrid sits at the top, and the gap is far larger than the price difference. Standard grade makes sense for light-duty beds with modest weed pressure, temporary plantings, or a job small enough that the 200 sq ft roll is the sensible buy.
Does water get through it?
Yes. Nutrients, water and air all pass through, which is what promotes plant health while weed growth is minimized. That permeability is the main advantage over plastic sheeting, which blocks everything.
Why polyspun rather than a woven fabric?
Polyspun is fine denier yarn laid in random patterns and then point bonded and compressed. There is no repeating weave for weed roots to probe through over time, which a woven grid inevitably has.
How much overlap do I need?
4 to 6 inches where runs meet. Overlap rather than butting the edges — a joint that opens is a direct route to daylight for whatever is underneath.
How many staples?
Stagger them at approximately one staple per 5 feet, along every edge, at every overlap and anywhere the fabric lifts. 6″ landscape staples are the standard pin and are sold separately.
How do I plant through it?
Cut an X slit where each plant will be placed and fold the flaps open to dig through. Keep the opening as small as the plant allows, since every extra opening is somewhere light reaches the soil.
Do I have to cover it with mulch?
It is recommended. Cover with 3 to 4 inches of bark, mulch or stone to protect the fabric from ultraviolet light and give the project a finished look. UV is what ages an exposed fabric fastest.
Will it stop weeds completely?
It blocks what tries to grow up through it, and seeds landing in the mulch on top can still root in that layer, so an occasional pull is normal. A pre-emergent herbicide before laying the fabric increases protection considerably. If weed pressure is heavy, heavy grade is markedly more effective than this fabric.
Will rodents or insects damage it?
It is resistant to rodent and insect damage, and being non-biodegradable it will not rot or mildew in the ground.
