Sleeve-It® SD-1 · Strata Systems · Carton of 5

A carton of five pre-engineered Sleeve-It SD-1 units — the fence post anchoring system for building a code-compliant fence directly on top of a segmental retaining wall. The cantilevered sleeve engages the soil mass behind the wall, so the fence load bypasses the dry-stacked wall units and the 36" offset requirement of IBC 1015.2 is eliminated.

01 Sleeve-It® SD-1 · Strata Systems

Sleeve-It SD-1 Retaining Wall Fence System

Sleeve-It SD-1 is a pre-engineered fence post anchoring system for building a code-compliant fence directly on top of a segmental retaining wall (SRW). Each carton contains five cantilevered units — one per fence post — installed behind the wall face during the wall build.

The problem it solves is structural. A segmental retaining wall is faced with dry-stacked, mortarless concrete units, and those units cannot resist the overturning moment generated when a load is applied to a fence post. Building code answers that with distance: IBC 1015.2 pushes the fence 36″ back from the wall face. Sleeve-It answers it with a cantilever that engages the soil mass behind the wall instead — so the fence goes right at the top of the wall and the offset requirement is eliminated.

Using Sleeve-It during the SRW build permits a code-compliant fence at the top of the wall — reclaiming the 36″ strip of usable real estate the offset would otherwise consume.

02 Why it works

A Cantilever Instead Of A Setback

The Sleeve-It System uses a traditional cantilever design to engage the overlying soil mass. The vertical sleeve that receives the fence post is joined to a base that extends back into the compacted fill behind the wall, and the weight of the soil over that base is what resists the fence load. The force never reaches the dry-stacked wall units — which is exactly why the fence can sit at the wall face.

04 Where it goes

Where Sleeve-It Is Used

Anywhere a fence needs to stand at the top of a segmental retaining wall rather than 36″ behind it.

Segmental retaining walls Residential privacy fences Property line fences Pool enclosure fencing Guards above walls Terraced yards Commercial developments HOA & multifamily sites
  • Maximizes usable real estate at the top of a retaining wall.
  • Reduces risk for wall designers resulting from fence integration.
  • Shortens construction time for retaining walls with summit fencing.

05 Installation

Simple Construction, No Trade Overlap

  1. Install the cantilevered Sleeve-It units near the elevation of the top of the wall, one at each planned fence post location.
  2. Fill and compact soil to the top of the sleeve as the wall courses are completed.
  3. Leave the disposable lid on the sleeve until the fence installer places the fence post in the sleeve and fills it with concrete.
  4. The fencing contractor finishes the fence, supported by the buried Sleeve-It System.

Because the sleeve waits below grade under its lid, the wall crew and the fence crew never have to be on site at the same time.

The Buried Profile

The side view shows why the system works. The vertical sleeve that receives the fence post is joined to a base that extends 30.6″ back into the reinforced fill behind the wall. Once soil is compacted over that base, the unit is locked in by the weight of the ground above it.

  • The sleeve stays open under its disposable lid until the fence installer sets the post and fills the sleeve with concrete.
  • The cantilever carries the fence load into the soil mass, so the dry-stacked wall units above never see the force.
  • Set one unit at each post location as the top courses go in — there is no retrofit version of this detail.

09 Common questions

Sleeve-It FAQs

What does the Sleeve-It system do?
It anchors fence posts at the top of a segmental retaining wall. Each unit is a cantilevered sleeve buried behind the wall face during construction; the compacted soil over the cantilever resists the fence load, so the dry-stacked wall units never carry it. The result is a code-compliant fence right at the top of the wall.
Does it really eliminate the 36" offset requirement?
Yes. Because of its cantilevered form and other properties, using Sleeve-It during the SRW build permits a code-compliant fence to be constructed, eliminating the 36" offset requirement of IBC 1015.2. As with any code matter, confirm final details with your wall designer and local building department.
How many units do I need?
One per fence post. Divide the length of your fence run by your post spacing to get the post count, then round up to the nearest carton — this listing is a carton of five units.
When does it get installed?
During wall construction, near the elevation of the top of the wall. It is not a retrofit product — the cantilever has to be buried in the compacted fill behind the wall as the courses go up, which is why it should be planned into the wall build from the start.
Can the wall crew and fence crew work separately?
Yes — that is one of the design points. The disposable lid stays on the buried sleeve until the fence installer arrives, drops the post in, and fills the sleeve with concrete. The two trades never need to be on site together, which shortens overall construction time.
What size is each unit?
Each unitary Sleeve-It SD-1 unit measures 23.4" high, 15.3" wide and 30.6" deep, and weighs 7 pounds. The depth is the cantilever that extends back into the soil behind the wall.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free on every order at Landscape Discount — Sleeve-It cartons ship free with no minimum order.
