Typar Standard & Heavy Grade
Professional-Grade Grass Reinforcement
Roll-out HDPE mesh that installs straight onto existing grass — no excavation, no base, no paving. The grass grows through and locks it in.
Choose Your Grade
GrassProtecta grass reinforcement mesh is a thick HDPE mesh supplied on a roll and laid directly onto existing grass to protect, reinforce and stabilize the surface against wear from pedestrian and vehicle traffic. It is the fix for grass that ruts and turns to mud under use — without paving it over. The sward grows up through the apertures and knits around the mesh strands, so a wheel load spreads across a wide area instead of concentrating in a tire print. Landscape Discount stocks both Typar grades on the 6.56′ × 65.6′ roll, plus the steel U-pins that fix them down.
Every order ships free. Not sure which grade your traffic calls for? The comparison below covers thickness, load and applications, and the FAQ answers the questions that come up most — starting with how long to wait before you use the surface.

GrassProtecta reinforces by interlock, not by rigidity. Once the mesh is pinned onto mown grass, the sward grows up through the apertures and the blades and roots knit around the mesh strands. That interlock produces what Typar calls a snowshoe effect — a wheel load spreads across a wide area of turf instead of concentrating in a tire print, so the surface resists rutting and compaction. The oscillated mesh structure adds grip and reduces slip underfoot and under tires.
What makes it different from rigid grass paving grids is the install. There is no excavation, no aggregate base, no compaction: mow short, unroll, pin down, wait for the grass. That is why a large area can be reinforced in a fraction of the time and cost of a paving grid — and why the surface stays a lawn you mow as usual, with the structure hidden down in the root zone once growth is established.
You will also see the category called grass protection mesh, turf protection mesh, grass stabilization mesh or grass reinforcement grid. Same idea in each case.
Both grades come on the same 6.56′ × 65.6′ roll covering 432 square feet, in green, made from HDPE with roughly 20% recycled polymer and fully recyclable. Thickness and mass are what separate them — and what determine how much traffic the finished surface takes.
Standard grade
The lighter of the two at 0.245 lb/ft². Suited to pedestrian paths, wheelchair access routes, and grass that sees light or occasional vehicle use such as overflow parking a few times a season.
Heavy grade
The thickest grade in the line at 0.41 lb/ft². Built for regular vehicle traffic, heavier loads and turning traffic — access roads, RV bays, equestrian surfaces and parking that gets used week in, week out.

Four steps, no earthworks. The mesh can also go onto newly landscaped ground with the soil seeded as required.
Cut the grass down before you start. The shorter the sward, the closer the mesh sits to the soil and the faster growth comes back through it.
Roll it out directly onto the existing grass, following the line of travel where you can. Cut to fit around edges and obstacles.
Fix the mesh with steel U-pins driven flush using a club hammer. Pin the field of the mesh and the overlaps where rolls meet.
Keep the area out of use until the sward has grown up through the apertures and knitted with the strands. Then mow and use it as normal.
Steel U-Pins come 50 to a bag. A single roll needs a minimum of four bags (200 pins). For two or more rolls, allow a minimum of three bags (150 pins) per roll, plus one extra bag more than the total roll quantity ordered. Typar Steel U-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar grass protection product and cannot ship alone.
GrassProtecta is one of several mesh systems we stock. If you need a shorter roll, a different width, or a specific manufacturer, the wider selection includes MudStop® HG heavy grade and Tenax GP-Flex 1800, in roll lengths from 25′ to 100′.
Four more grass protection mesh products, with roll sizes and grades to suit smaller areas and tighter budgets.

Once the grass has grown through and knitted with the mesh, the reinforced surface handles up to 8 tons per axle imposed load. The interlock between roots, blades and mesh strands spreads the wheel load across a wide area rather than concentrating it in a tire print.
Standard (0.45″, 0.245 lb/ft²) suits pedestrian paths, wheelchair access routes and light or occasional vehicle use such as overflow parking. Heavy (0.55″, 0.41 lb/ft²) is the choice for regular vehicle traffic, heavier loads and turning traffic. Both cover 432 ft² per roll.
Typar recommends leaving it unused until the grass has grown up through the apertures — a few months, and up to eight depending on season and geographic location. Using it immediately slows grass growth and limits how effectively the mesh reinforces the surface.
No. The mesh installs directly onto the existing grass surface after mowing, which is what makes it so much faster and cheaper than a rigid plastic paving grid. It can also be laid on newly landscaped ground and seeded.
Pins come 50 to a bag. A single roll needs a minimum of four bags (200 pins) for effective pinning. For two or more rolls, allow a minimum of three bags (150 pins) per roll, plus one extra bag more than the total roll quantity ordered. Note that Typar Steel U-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar grass protection product and cannot ship alone.
Yes. Once the grass has grown through, the mesh sits down in the root zone and the area mows like any other lawn. After establishment the structure is effectively invisible.
Yes. The surface stays open grass, so rainwater penetrates naturally into the ground below. It can be used for source control in line with LID and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) guidelines, and it is a common alternative to impermeable paving where lot coverage or planning restrictions apply.
High density polyethylene, with approximately 20% of the polymer from recycled material, and fully recyclable at end of life. It is supplied in green, with an oscillated mesh structure designed to increase grip and reduce slip.
