01 Hangs beneath the storm grate

The Dandy Sack Storm Grate Sediment Filter

Storm grate filtration quality is what the Dandy Sack is all about. This incredibly strong open-top bag is specially designed to hang underneath a storm grate, where it expertly filters the thickest sediment-laden storm water.

Suspended solids are allowed to settle out of the slowed flow and are captured by the Dandy Sack storm grate sediment filter before they reach the inlet. Internal straps cradle the grate, so there is no rebar to set and nothing to fabricate on site.

Why the containment depth matters. A deeper sack holds more sediment but becomes awkward and heavy to lift out. Two feet is the point where the unit still holds a worthwhile volume between services while remaining manageable for one person on the lifting straps.

04 Sizing

Available Sizes

Measure the grate the sack will hang from, then choose the matching size. Four sizes are stocked.

Measure the grate, not the opening. The size given is the grate the sack is fitted around. If you are working from a drawing rather than the grate itself, check the figure against the frame before ordering.

05 Installation

Installation Guidelines

Four steps. The one to get right is the strap position: the grate must sit between the upper and lower straps.

  1. Remove the grate. Lift the grate out of the catch basin.
  2. Fit oil absorbents if using them. Place the absorbent pillow in the pouch on the bottom of the unit.
  3. Seat the grate in the straps. Stand the grate on end, move the top lifting straps out of the way, and place the grate into the Dandy Sack so it sits below the top straps and above the lower straps.
  4. Lower the assembly in. Holding the lifting straps, insert the grate into the inlet.
Strap position is the whole install

The grate has to end up below the top straps and above the lower ones. That is what lets the internal straps cradle its weight and keeps the sack hanging square beneath the grate. Seat it wrong and the sack will not hang properly, and lifting it out later becomes a problem.

06 Maintenance

The One-Third Rule

Because the sack hangs out of sight beneath the grate, servicing it depends on actually looking inside — and there is a specific threshold to look for.

  • After each storm event, remove all accumulated sediment and debris from the vicinity of the unit.
  • After storms and at regular intervals, look into the sack. If the containment area is more than one third full of sediment, the unit must be emptied.
  • To empty it, lift the unit using the lifting straps and remove the grate. If using oil absorbents, replace the pillow when it is near saturation.

One third is not an arbitrary figure. Past that point the remaining containment volume is too small to handle the next event, and the unit starts passing sediment straight through.

How is the Dandy Sack different from a Dandy Bag?
The Dandy Sack is an open-top bag that hangs beneath the grate with a two-foot containment area. A Dandy Bag encloses the grate itself. If your inlet has no grate at all, the Dandy Curb sits against the opening instead.
How do I work out which size I need?
Measure the grate the sack will be fitted around. Four sizes are stocked: 24″ x 24″, 36″ x 24″, 48″ x 24″ and 48″ x 36″.
Do I need rebar or any fixings?
No. Internal straps cradle the grate and carry the unit, so nothing is drilled, set or fabricated on site. That is the main reason it installs as fast as it does.
Where exactly does the grate sit in the sack?
Below the top straps and above the lower straps. Stand the grate on end, move the top lifting straps aside, and seat the grate between the two sets of straps before lowering the assembly into the inlet.
When does it need emptying?
Look into the sack after storm events and at regular intervals. If the containment area is more than one third full of sediment, the unit must be emptied. Past that point there is not enough capacity left for the next event.
How do I empty it?

Can it capture oil as well as sediment?
With the optional oil absorbent pillow fitted in the pouch on the bottom of the unit, yes. Replace the pillow when it approaches saturation.
Why is it orange?
Visibility. The bright orange monofilament geotextile makes the unit easy to spot on site, which matters more than usual here because the sack itself hangs out of sight below the grate.
