How much white ground cover fabric do I need?

Work out the area in square feet and match it to a roll: 1,800 for the 6 by 300 foot, 3,600 for the 12 by 300 foot and 4,500 for the 15 by 300 foot. Allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs, and more again if it will also be used for frost protection.

How does white ground cover compare to Sunbelt?

Same weight and construction: 3.2 oz woven polypropylene, UV treated, permeable, resistant to tearing and puncture. The difference is color. Sunbelt is black and blocks 99.7 percent of light for maximum weed control; white reflects light and doubles as frost protection.

Can white ground cover be used in a greenhouse?

Yes, and the reflective surface is an advantage there, since light that would otherwise be absorbed by a dark floor is returned upward into the crop.

Dewitt white ground cover UV treated woven fabric on a 6′ × 300′ roll covering 1,800 square feet. The narrowest roll — easiest to handle single-handed, and a natural fit for rows, borders and nursery aisles. A strong, heavy 3.2 oz white woven polypropylene that resists tearing, puncturing and weed penetration — and because it reflects rather than absorbs, it also works as a frost blanket.

Dewitt White Ground Cover UV Treated Woven Fabric

A 3.2 oz, UV-stabilized, white woven polypropylene UV resistant landscape fabric. It is a strong, heavy fabric, which is what makes it resistant to tearing, puncturing and weed penetration — and it is permeable, so water and nutrients pass through to nourish the plants rather than running off.

The white surface is the reason to choose it. Where a black fabric absorbs heat, white reflects — and that reflective property, combined with the thickness of the material, gives this fabric a second job that no black ground cover can do.

2jobs from one fabric

A woven ground cover through the growing season, and a frost blanket when the temperature drops.

02 The reason to choose white

It Doubles As A Frost Blanket

Because of its reflective properties and the thickness of the material, this fabric can be used as a frost blanket in the cold months. Placed over plants and shrubs it protects against light frost and cold temperatures by retaining the day's heat and blocking the night's wind.

03 What you get

Benefits

3.2 oz UV-stabilized white woven polypropylene fabric
Strong and heavy, resisting tearing, puncturing and weed penetration
Permeable — water and nutrients pass through to nourish plants
Reflective white surface rather than heat-absorbing black
Can be used as an alternative to a frost blanket in the cold months
Protects against light frost by retaining the day's heat and blocking night wind
UV treated for prolonged outdoor exposure
Three roll widths on 300-foot rolls

Two uses, one purchase. Most growers buying frost protection buy it separately from ground cover. This fabric is heavy enough and reflective enough to serve both roles, which changes the arithmetic if you currently stock both.

04 Choosing a color

White Or Black Ground Cover?

Both are 3.2 oz woven polypropylene, both UV treated, both permeable, and both resist tearing and puncture. Color is not cosmetic here — it changes what the fabric does with light and heat.

	White Ground Cover	Sunbelt (black)
Light	Reflects light back upward	Absorbs light, blocking 99.7% from reaching the soil
Heat	Reflects rather than absorbs	Absorbs, warming the soil beneath
Second use	Doubles as a frost blanket over plants	Ground cover only
Weight	3.2 oz woven, UV stabilized	3.2 oz woven, UV treated
Best for	Where reflected light and cooler ground help, and where frost protection is also needed	General purpose weed control and water conservation

The short version. Choose white where you want light reflected back up and the option of frost protection. Choose black Sunbelt where maximum light blocking and general purpose weed control is the whole requirement.

05 Sizing

Available Roll Sizes

Three widths, all on 300-foot rolls. Match the width to the bed or the area you are covering.

6′ × 300′1,800 sq ft 12′ × 300′3,600 sq ft 15′ × 300′4,500 sq ft

Part number	Roll size	Sq ft	Best for
WGC6	6′ × 300′	1,800	Rows, borders and nursery aisles — easiest to handle single-handed
WGC12	12′ × 300′	3,600	Wider beds, greenhouse floors and container blocks
WGC15	15′ × 300′	4,500	The widest roll — largest coverage with the fewest seams

If you are also using it for frost protection, size for the wider of the two jobs. Covering plants and shrubs needs enough width to drape over the canopy and reach the ground either side, which is usually more than the bed width alone.

06 Where it goes

Applications

Greenhouse floors Nursery beds & aisles Container blocks Outdoor displays Landscape beds Frost protection over plants Frost protection over shrubs Row crops Hot-climate growing areas Weed control under displays

Worth noting the frost-protection use is a seasonal one. The same rolls can go down as ground cover through the growing season and come up to cover plants when a cold night is forecast, which is why growers tend to buy more than the ground area alone would suggest.

07 Installation

Two Ways To Use It

As ground cover: clear the area of existing weeds and debris, roll the fabric out along the bed, and secure it with landscape staples or fabric pins along the edges, at every seam and anywhere it lifts. Overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them, and cut planting holes no larger than the plant needs.

As a frost blanket: drape the fabric over the plants or shrubs before the cold sets in, letting it reach the ground on both sides so the day's warmth is held underneath and wind is kept off. Weight or pin the edges so it cannot lift, and remove it once the risk passes.

Reach the ground on both sides. Frost protection works by trapping heat radiating out of the soil and blocking wind. Fabric that only sits on top of the canopy does neither, which is the most common reason a frost cover disappoints.

10 Common questions

White Ground Cover FAQs

Why choose white rather than black ground cover?

White reflects light and heat where black absorbs them. That makes white the choice where you want light reflected back upward and cooler ground beneath — and it is what allows this fabric to double as a frost blanket, which a black ground cover cannot do.

Can it really be used as a frost blanket?

Yes. Because of its reflective properties and the thickness of the material it can be used as an alternative to a frost blanket in the cold months. Placed over plants and shrubs it protects against light frost by retaining the day's heat and blocking the night's wind.

How much fabric do I need?

Work out the area in square feet and match it to a roll: 1,800 for the 6′ x 300′, 3,600 for the 12′ x 300′ and 4,500 for the 15′ x 300′. Allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs — and more again if you also intend to use it for frost protection.

Does water get through it?

Yes. The fabric is permeable, so water and the nutrients it carries pass through to nourish the plants rather than running off the surface.

How does it compare to Sunbelt?

Same weight and construction — 3.2 oz woven polypropylene, UV treated, permeable, resistant to tearing and puncture. The difference is color and what that does with light. Sunbelt is black and blocks 99.7% of light for maximum weed control; white reflects and doubles as frost protection.

Will it block weeds as well as black fabric?

It is a strong, heavy woven fabric resistant to weed penetration. For maximum light blocking specifically, black fabric is the more direct tool, since blocking light is the whole mechanism of weed suppression.

How do I use it for frost protection?

Drape it over the plants or shrubs before the cold sets in, letting it reach the ground on both sides, and weight or pin the edges so it cannot lift. Remove it once the risk passes.

Can I use it in a greenhouse?

Yes, and the reflective surface is an advantage there — light that would otherwise be absorbed by a dark floor is returned upward into the crop.

How do I secure it as ground cover?

Landscape staples or fabric pins along the edges, at every seam and anywhere the fabric lifts. Overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them together.

What does shipping cost?

Nothing. Shipping is free on every order, at any quantity.
