The Dandy Pop Storm Grate Sediment Filter

For protecting storm drains and diverting storm water, the patented Dandy Pop storm grate sediment filter is designed for use with field grates, and it pops up in seconds. It fully encloses the grate, eliminating sediment infiltration.

It exists to replace something that does not work well. Silt fence rung around a field inlet is cumbersome, it falls down, and it leaves infiltration points wherever the fabric meets the ground. The Dandy Pop is a single sealed unit instead: suspended solids settle out of the slowed flow and are captured before they reach the inlet.

Visibility here is a safety point, not just an inspection one. On an active site the unit sits in open ground where plant is moving. Safety orange and black makes it obvious to machine operators, which is a different job from the plain orange used on street inlets.

Measure the grate the unit will enclose, then choose the matching size. Three standard sizes are stocked.

Measure the grate, not the opening. The size given is the grate the dome encloses. If you are working from a drawing rather than the grate itself, check the figure against the frame before ordering.

05 Installation

Installation Guidelines

Five steps, and the unit does most of the work — it pops open on its own and closes with Velcro.

  1. Pop it open. Pop open the Dandy Pop near the inlet it will be installed on.
  2. Fit oil absorbents if using them. Place the absorbent pillow on the bottom of the unit.
  3. Place the grate inside. Remove the grate from its frame and place it into the Dandy Pop.
  4. Seal the Velcro. Pull up the slack and seal the Velcro to enclose the grate completely.
  5. Set it back in the frame. Holding the lifting straps, insert the grate inside the Dandy Pop onto the inlet, making sure the grate seats completely in the frame.
Two things to check before you walk away

First, the Velcro must be fully sealed with the slack pulled up — a partly closed dome is an infiltration point, which is the exact problem this product replaces. Second, the grate must seat completely in its frame; a proud grate is a trip and plant hazard on an active site.

06 Maintenance

Keeping It Working

The dome shape is deliberate: it is what makes clearing the unit straightforward rather than a job with a shovel.

  • After each rain event, remove all accumulated sediment and debris from the panels, the surface and the vicinity of the unit.
  • As needed, remove the sediment that has accumulated within the containment area of the Dandy Pop.
  • If using oil absorbents, remove and replace them when they near saturation.

Note that the panels themselves need clearing, not just the containment area. Sediment caking the outside of the dome reduces the flow it can pass, which is what causes ponding around the inlet.

08 Which Dandy do I need?

Field Grate Or Street Inlet

The Dandy Pop is for field grates in open ground, where silt fence would otherwise be used. For street inlets, use a Dandy Bag or Curb Bag on a grate, a Sack beneath one, or a Dandy Curb against a grateless opening.

Dandy Pop FAQs

What is the Dandy Pop for?
Field grates — inlets sitting in open ground on an active site, where the alternative is ringing the inlet with silt fence. It pops open in a second and fully encloses the grate, so there are no infiltration points and nothing to fall down.
How is it different from a Dandy Bag?
Both enclose the grate, but the Dandy Pop is a self-opening dome in safety orange and black, built for field conditions and visibility to machine operators. A Dandy Bag is a flat bag for street and lot grates. Use the Pop where plant is moving and silt fence would otherwise be specified.
Does it really replace silt fence?
Around an inlet, yes — that is the point of it. Silt fence is cumbersome to install, falls down, and leaves infiltration points where the fabric meets the ground. Enclosing the grate itself removes all three problems.
How do I work out which size I need?
Measure the grate the dome will enclose. Three standard sizes are stocked: 30″ x 30″, 40″ x 40″ and 50″ x 50″.
How does it close?
Velcro. Place the grate inside, pull up the slack and seal the Velcro to enclose the grate, then set the assembly back into the frame using the lifting straps.
What if the Velcro is not fully sealed?
You have created the infiltration point the product exists to eliminate. Pull the slack up properly and seal the full length before setting the grate back in.
How often does it need clearing?
After each rain event, clear accumulated sediment and debris from the panels, the surface and the vicinity of the unit. Empty the containment area as needed. The dome shape is designed to make this straightforward.
Why does the outside need cleaning too?
Sediment caking the panels reduces the flow the geotextile can pass, which causes water to pond around the inlet instead of draining. Clearing the panels keeps the unit working at capacity.
Is there a minimum order?
No, there is no minimum order. Order any quantity, in any mix of the three sizes.
Can it capture oil as well as sediment?
With optional oil absorbents placed on the bottom of the unit, yes. Remove and replace them when they near saturation.
