Drainfield Fabric

Drainfield fabric is a commercial grade spunbond polypropylene geotextile with high puncture resistance. Spunbond geotextiles have high water flow, which creates excellent permittivity — and that is exactly what a drainfield needs: water moving freely through while soil and fines stay out.

It is a favorite among professional landscapers for its strength and versatility. The fabric is easy to cut, easy to work with, and tear resistant, which matters on a job where you are trimming around pipe, stone and wall faces rather than laying clean rectangles.

A drainfield fabric that restricts flow defeats the drain it was installed to protect. Spunbond construction gives high water flow and excellent permittivity while still holding back the fines that would otherwise clog the stone — both halves of the job, at once.

Filtration is a two-part job. Stop the soil but also stop the water and you build pressure where you wanted drainage. Pass the water but let fines through and the stone clogs. A spunbond geotextile is specified because it does both halves at once.

04 Choosing

2 oz or 3 oz?

Both weights are the same spunbond construction and install identically. The heavier fabric gives more strength and more puncture resistance, and it costs more — so there is no sense over-specifying a light job.

The same fabric covers drainage and weed control because both depend on the same property — letting water through while holding solids back. What changes is which side of it you care about.

07 Installation

Laying Drainfield Fabric

Grade the excavation and clear anything sharp enough to puncture the fabric, then roll it out and overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them. A separation layer only works where it is continuous.

In a trench or french drain: line the excavation, place the drainage stone, then fold the fabric back over the top so the aggregate is fully wrapped and fines cannot reach the pipe perforations from above.

Behind a wall: line the excavated face and the base before the drainage stone goes in, and carry the fabric up high enough that backfill soil cannot spill over the top edge into the stone.

The top edge is where installations fail. If the fabric stops below the level of the backfill, soil washes straight over the top into the drainage stone and the fabric below it makes no difference at all. Carry it up and fold it over.

Drainfield Fabric FAQs

What does drainfield fabric do?
Two things at once. It lets water flow freely through, and it holds back the soil and fines that would otherwise migrate into the drainage stone and clog it. Spunbond construction is specified because it delivers high water flow and excellent permittivity while still filtering.
2 oz or 3 oz?
2 oz for general landscaping, gardens and planters, and standard drainfield or french drain work in reasonable ground. 3 oz where the stone is coarser or more angular, the backfill is heavier, or puncture risk is higher — including retaining wall work.
How much do I need?
Every roll is 300 feet long: 1,800 sq ft for a 6′ width, 2,400 for an 8′, and 3,600 for a 12′. Work out the area you are lining and allow extra for overlaps, which are not optional on a filter layer.
Do I overlap or butt the seams?
Always overlap. A separation layer only works where it is continuous, and a butted joint that opens under load is a direct path for fines into the drainage stone.
How do I wrap a french drain?
Line the excavation, place the drainage stone, then fold the fabric back over the top so the aggregate is fully wrapped. That way water enters through the fabric from every direction and fines cannot reach the pipe perforations from above.
What is the most common installation mistake?
Stopping the fabric below the level of the backfill behind a wall. Soil then washes over the top edge into the drainage stone, and the fabric below makes no difference at all.
How do I secure it?

Can I use it for weed control?
Yes, weed control is one of its listed uses and it works well beneath stone. For an exposed planting bed that will be walked on and planted through, a woven weed barrier is the more suitable tool.
Can I drive on it before covering it?
Avoid it. Place fill from one side and work forward over material already down. Driving or turning on bare fabric risks puncturing it and dragging it out of position.
