01 Needle-punched woven · 4.1 oz

Dewitt 20 Year Weed Barrier Fabric

A woven polypropylene weed barrier fabric that has been needle-punched and sewn with heavy-duty fibers, built for controlling weeds and stabilizing loose soil areas.

The heavyweight 4.1 oz fabric is woven from precision-engineered, highly durable polypropylene in order to provide a 20 year material lifespan. Strategically placed needle punch points let water, nutrients and oxygen pass through to nurture your plants while still inhibiting out-of-control weed growth.

Woven, needle-punched, neutral black — as supplied on 250-foot rolls.

20year material lifespan

Woven from precision-engineered polypropylene, and rot resistant — it resists disintegration even under the most treacherous outdoor conditions.

02 Why it lasts

Engineered For Two Decades

A weed barrier fails one of two ways: it tears, or it rots. This fabric is sewn with heavy-duty fibers against the first and is rot resistant against the second, which is what supports the stated 20 year figure rather than a hopeful one.

03 What you get

Why The 20 Year Gets Specified

  • Controls weed growth from popping up through mulch and soil, and around rocks and landscape decor
  • Heavyweight 4.1 oz woven polypropylene, needle punched and sewn with heavy-duty fibers
  • Precision-engineered for a 20 year material lifespan
  • Rot resistant, and resists disintegration even under the most treacherous outdoor conditions
  • Perfect for greenhouse use and anywhere loose soil needs to be stabilized
  • Prevents harmful insects and wildlife from damaging sensitive plants and roots
  • Can be used to retain unstable and deteriorating rock and plant walls
  • Easy to cut, measure, install and secure — ground staples, stakes, spikes, or even natural vegetation, rocks and mulch
Cost-effective at scale. This fabric is well suited to professional and commercial use as well as home landscaping, which is where a 20 year lifespan actually pays — the fabric outlasts several cycles of the mulch or stone sitting on top of it.

05 Uses and applications

What The 20 Year Is For

Weed control under mulch Weed control under soil Around rocks & landscape decor Greenhouse floors Stabilizing loose soil Retaining rock & plant walls Insect & wildlife protection Commercial landscaping Home landscape beds Long-term plantings
The neutral black blends seamlessly into landscaping while preventing light and the sun's damaging rays from penetrating to sensitive plants and vegetation.

06 20 Year or Pro 5?

Choosing Between The Two

Both are needle-punched woven polypropylene in neutral black, and both come in the same six widths on 250-foot rolls. The difference is weight and what it buys.

20 Year at 4.1 oz is engineered around a stated 20-year material lifespan, is rot resistant, and suits greenhouse use. Pro 5 at 5 oz is the heavier fabric, double-sided, with 12″ spacing stripes and extra stability on mounds and slopes.

07 Installation

Easy To Cut And Secure

The 20 Year is easy to cut, measure, install and secure. It can be held in place with ground staples, stakes or spikes — or even with natural vegetation, rocks and mulch where pinning is impractical.

Clear the area of existing weeds and debris, roll the fabric out along the bed, overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them, and pin the edges, the seams and anywhere the fabric lifts. Cut planting holes no larger than the plant needs — every extra opening is somewhere light can reach the soil.

Keep cuts small. Cut planting holes no larger than the plant needs. Every extra opening is somewhere light can reach the soil, and on a fabric intended to last twenty years those openings are what shorten it.

10 Common questions

20 Year Weed Barrier FAQs

How much fabric do I need?
Work out the area in square feet and match it to a roll: 750 for the 3′, 1,000 for the 4′, 1,250 for the 5′, 1,500 for the 6′, 2,000 for the 8′ and 3,000 for the 12′. All are 250 feet long. Allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs.
What does the 20 year figure actually mean?
It is a material lifespan — the fabric is woven from precision-engineered, highly durable polypropylene in order to provide 20 years of service. It is rot resistant and resists disintegration even under the most treacherous outdoor conditions.
How is this different from Pro 5?
The 20 Year is 4.1 oz, engineered around the stated lifespan, rot resistant and well suited to greenhouse use. Pro 5 is heavier at 5 oz, double-sided, with 12″ spacing stripes and extra stability on mounds and hills.
Does water get through it?
Yes. The needle punch points are strategically placed to let water, nutrients and oxygen pass through to nurture your plants, while the woven fabric still inhibits out-of-control weed growth.
Can I use it in a greenhouse?
Yes — it is described as perfect for greenhouse use, and for any area where loose soil needs to be stabilized.
Will it stop insects and animals?
It helps. The fabric prevents harmful insects and wildlife from damaging sensitive plants and roots, which is a secondary benefit of a barrier this dense.
Can it hold back a failing wall?
It can be used to retain unstable and deteriorating rock and plant walls. For anything structural, have the wall assessed rather than relying on fabric alone.
How do I secure it?
Ground staples, stakes or spikes along the edges, at every seam and anywhere the fabric lifts. It can also be held with natural vegetation, rocks or mulch where pinning is impractical.
Will the black color fade?
The neutral black is produced to blend into landscaping and to prevent light and the sun's damaging rays penetrating to sensitive plants and vegetation.
Is it suitable for commercial work?
Yes. It is cost-effective and well suited to professional and commercial use as well as home landscaping projects.
What does shipping cost?
Nothing. Shipping is free on every order, at any quantity.
