Dandy · Round Grate · 36″ Round

Dandy Bag sediment inlet filter for a 36″ Round grate. A large round grate found on higher-capacity storm drains. The patented flagship bag encloses the grate so storm water is slowed and suspended solids drop out and are captured before they reach the inlet.

01 Flat grate and mountable curb inlets

The Dandy Bag Sediment Inlet Filter

You can tell it is a Dandy the moment you open it up. This patented flagship sediment inlet filter is designed to take a lot of hard knocks, and it is used with flat grates — including round — and mountable curbs to filter the sludgy sediment-laden storm water that ordinary protection lets straight through.

The mechanism is settlement. The bag slows the incoming flow, suspended solids drop out of that slowed water, and the geotextile captures them before they reach the inlet rather than after they are already in the storm system — which is what delivers regulatory compliance performance.

The bag encloses the grate, which is then lowered back into its frame.

17sizes · round and rectangular

Sizes built to fit any inlet in any municipality — five round grates and twelve rectangular.

02 Why it gets specified

Visible In Any Weather

The bag is fabricated from a highly visible orange monofilament geotextile so it can be seen in any weather. That matters more than it sounds: inlet protection only works if it is inspected and serviced, and a unit you can spot in driving rain gets checked.

03 What you get

Get Maximum Benefits With Dandy

  • Unique, patented design keeps silt, sediment and debris out of storm systems
  • Reduces or eliminates the need to flush or clean inlets
  • Fabricated from a highly visible orange monofilament geotextile so it can be seen in any weather
  • Sizes built to fit any inlet in any municipality
  • Very easy to install, maintain and inspect
  • Can be re-used
  • Works with flat grates, round grates and mountable curbs
  • Optional oil absorbent pillow fits a pouch on the bottom of the unit
Reusable is the part that shows up on a long job. Because sediment removal rather than replacement is the normal maintenance action, the same units carry through a project instead of being thrown away and re-bought every time they load up.

04 Sizing

Available Sizes

Measure the grate the bag will enclose, then pick the matching size. Seventeen are stocked — five round and twelve rectangular.

Round grates — five sizes Rectangular grates — twelve sizes
Measure the grate, not the opening. The size given is the grate the bag encloses. Round sizes are the grate diameter. If you are working from a drawing rather than the grate itself, check the figure against the frame before ordering.

05 Installation

Installation Guidelines

The bag goes on around the grate, not down into the inlet. Three steps.

  1. Place the empty bag over the grate. Stand the grate on end and fit the empty Dandy Bag over it.
  2. Fit oil absorbents if using them. Place the absorbent pillow in the pouch on the bottom of the unit and attach the pillow to the tether loop.
  3. Lower the grate into its frame. Hold the lifting device — do not rely on the lifting device to support the entire weight of the grate — and place the grate into its frame.
Handling the grate

The lifting device is there to help you position and later retrieve the unit, not to carry the weight of a cast iron grate. Support the grate itself while lowering it into the frame.

06 Maintenance

Keeping It Working

Inlet protection is only as good as its upkeep, and on an inspected site this is exactly what the inspector will be looking at.

  • After each storm event, remove all accumulated sediment and debris from the surface and vicinity of the unit.
  • As needed, remove the sediment that has accumulated within the containment area of the Dandy Bag.
  • If using oil absorbents, remove and replace the absorbent pillow when it is near saturation.

Because the unit is reusable, clearing sediment rather than replacing the bag is the normal maintenance action.

11 Common questions

Dandy Bag FAQs

What is the difference between the Dandy Bag and the Dandy Curb Bag?
The Dandy Bag is for flat grates, including round grates, and mountable curbs. The Dandy Curb Bag is designed specifically for curb and gutter inlets and includes a dam edge that partially blocks the curb hood. Match the product to the inlet type you have.
How do I work out which size I need?
Measure the grate the bag will enclose. Rectangular sizes are given as grate dimensions; round sizes are the grate diameter. Seventeen sizes are stocked, covering 23″ through 48″.
Do you have round sizes?
Yes, five of them — 23″, 24″, 28″, 36″ and 39″ diameters. Round grates are a common reason people end up with badly fitting inlet protection, so it is worth using the correct shape.
Is there a minimum order?
No, there is no minimum order. Order any quantity, in any mix of the seventeen sizes, round or rectangular.
Does the bag go in the inlet or around the grate?
Around the grate. Stand the grate on end, fit the empty bag over it, then lower the whole assembly back into its frame. Support the grate itself rather than relying on the lifting device.
How often does it need servicing?
Remove accumulated sediment and debris from the surface and vicinity after each storm event, and clear sediment from inside the containment area as needed. If you are running oil absorbent pillows, replace them near saturation.
Is it reusable?
Yes. It is designed to be installed, maintained, inspected and reused, which is where the cost advantage over disposable inlet protection shows up across a long project.
Can it capture oil as well as sediment?
With the optional oil absorbent pillow fitted in the pouch on the bottom of the unit and attached to the tether loop, yes. Replace the pillow when it approaches saturation.
Why is it orange?
Visibility. The highly visible orange monofilament geotextile means the unit can be seen in any weather, so it gets inspected and serviced rather than forgotten under a layer of silt.
What does shipping cost?
Nothing. Shipping is free on every order, at any quantity.
