The Dandy Curb Sack Sediment Inlet Filter

For the best results in gutter and curb inlet filtration, the rugged, patented Dandy Curb Sack is extremely popular because it handles jobs big and small and can be reused again and again. Its open-top design fits any size gutter and curb inlet.

What sets it apart is that it does two jobs at once. The sack hangs beneath the grate to catch settling solids, and a cylindrical portion seats up against the curb to stop silt and debris entering through the curb opening — the gap that a grate-only filter leaves wide open.

The Curb Opening Is The Weak Point

On a combination inlet, sediment does not only fall through the grate — a good deal of it runs along the gutter and straight in through the curb opening. The Dandy Curb Sack conforms to the shape of the curb and blocks that route, which is what a bag fitted to the grate alone cannot do.

Measure the grate the sack will be fitted around. Three sizes are stocked, all at the same price.

Measure the grate, not the opening. The size given is the grate the sack is fitted around. If you are working from a drawing rather than the grate itself, check the figure against the frame before ordering.

05 Installation

Installation Guidelines

Five steps. Two matter more than the rest: where the grate sits in the straps, and which way the cylindrical section faces.

  1. Remove the grate. Lift the grate out of the catch basin and stand it on end.
  2. Seat the grate in the straps. Move the top lifting strap out of the way and place the grate into the Dandy Curb Sack so it sits below the top straps and above the lower straps.
  3. Reposition the top straps. Bring the top straps back into place so they sit on top of the grate.
  4. Lower the assembly in. Grab the top straps and carefully insert the Dandy Curb Sack into the grate frame.
  5. Seat the cylinder against the curb. Make sure the cylindrical portion is up against the curb, to prevent silt, sediment and debris entering the inlet there.
Orientation decides whether it works

The cylindrical portion has to end up against the curb face. Install the unit the wrong way round and the grate is protected while the curb opening is left wide open — which is the route most gutter-borne sediment takes. It is the single easiest thing to get wrong on this product.

06 Maintenance

The One-Third Rule

The containment area sits out of sight below the grate, so servicing depends on looking inside — and there is a specific threshold to look for.

  • After each storm event, remove all accumulated sediment and debris from the vicinity of the unit.
  • After storms and at regular intervals, look into the sack. If the containment area is more than one third full of sediment, the unit must be emptied.
  • To empty it, lift the unit out of the inlet using the lifting straps and remove the grate.
  • If using oil absorbents, replace the absorbent pillow when it is near saturation.

Past one third full there is not enough containment volume left to handle the next event, and the unit begins passing sediment straight through.

Dandy Curb Sack FAQs

How is the Curb Sack different from the Dandy Sack?
Both hang beneath the grate with an open top, but the Curb Sack adds a cylindrical portion that seats against the curb face and blocks the curb opening as well. Use the Dandy Sack where the grate is the only route in, and the Curb Sack on a combination inlet with both a grate and a curb opening.
Which way round does it go?
The cylindrical portion must end up against the curb. Fitted the wrong way round the grate is protected but the curb opening is left open, which is where most gutter-borne sediment enters.
How do I work out which size I need?
Measure the grate the sack will be fitted around. Three sizes are stocked: 24″ x 24″, 40″ x 40″ and 50″ x 50″, all at the same price.
Where does the grate sit in the sack?
Below the top straps and above the lower straps. Seat it there with the top straps moved aside, then bring the top straps back over the grate before lowering the assembly into the frame.
When does it need emptying?
Look into the sack after storm events and at regular intervals. If the containment area is more than one third full of sediment, the unit must be emptied. Past that point there is not enough capacity left for the next event.
How do I empty it?
Lift the unit out of the inlet using the lifting straps and remove the grate. Clear the sediment, reseat the grate between the straps, and lower it back in with the cylinder against the curb.
Is there a minimum order?
No, there is no minimum order. Order any quantity, in any mix of the three sizes.
Is it reusable?
Yes, and that is a large part of the appeal. It is designed to be installed, inspected and reused again and again, so the same units carry through a long project rather than being replaced.
Can it capture oil as well as sediment?
With the optional oil absorbents fitted, yes. Replace the absorbent pillow when it approaches saturation.
Does it fit any curb inlet?
The open-top design fits any size gutter and curb inlet, and the unit conforms to the shape of the curb rather than requiring a flat face. Match the size to your grate.
