Pond Underlayment Fabric

Pond underlayment fabric provides dependable protection against punctures to a rubber or PVC liner in pond and waterfall applications. It goes in beneath the liner, so the liner sits on fabric rather than on the rock, gravel and ridges that would otherwise be pressed into it by the weight of the water.

This is a needle-punched polypropylene fabric — a non-biodegradable geotextile produced by joining 100% polypropylene staple fibers in a random network to form a high-strength, dimensionally-stable fabric. At 8 oz it is the heavy-duty weight, and it is rot and mildew resistant, which is what allows it to be buried under a pond and left alone.

02 What the liner is up against

The Water Does The Damage

A liner does not fail because someone stepped on it. It fails because the weight of the water presses it onto whatever is underneath, and that load concentrates on every stone and ridge in the excavation. Underlayment removes those points, and the repair it avoids means draining the pond and lifting the liner.

Rot and mildew resistance is not a minor detail here. This fabric sits permanently between a body of water and wet ground. Anything that breaks down in those conditions — cardboard, carpet padding, untreated matting — leaves the liner sitting directly on the rock it was meant to cover, at the point when you can least easily get to it.

Size it larger than the liner footprint. The fabric has to follow the contours, run up the sides and reach past the top edge — and runs overlap rather than butt. Measuring the pond floor alone will leave you short.

It is the same job in a different setting: hold the soil, pass the water, survive what is dropped on top of it.

06 Installation

Laying Pond Underlayment

The order only goes one way: excavation, underlayment, liner, water.

Clear the excavation of anything loose and obviously sharp first — underlayment protects against what remains, not against a rock you could have lifted out by hand. Lay the fabric into the excavation following the contours, and carry it up the sides and past the top edge.

Overlap adjacent runs generously rather than butting them, since the liner will be resting on the joint. Smooth out wrinkles as you go, then install the liner directly on top before adding any water.

Do not stop at the bottom of the excavation. Liners take their worst abrasion where they turn up a bank and where rock or edging rests against them at the rim. Underlayment that covers only the floor leaves the most vulnerable part of the liner unprotected.

Fabric that shifts while you are positioning a liner creates gaps exactly where you cannot see them afterwards. Pin the fabric at the rim and along the overlaps to hold it in place while the liner goes in.

Does the underlayment go above or below the liner?
Below. The order is excavation, underlayment, waterproof liner, then water. The fabric protects the liner from what is underneath it and supports it over soft spots.
Does it work with rubber and PVC liners?
Yes — it provides dependable protection against punctures to both rubber and PVC liners in pond and waterfall applications.
How much do I need?
Size it larger than the liner footprint, because the fabric has to follow the contours, run up the sides and reach past the top edge. The 6′ x 100′ roll gives 600 sq ft and the 6′ x 300′ gives 1,800. Add extra for overlaps.
Do I overlap or butt the seams?
Overlap, generously. A butted joint that opens leaves the liner sitting on bare ground at exactly the point where two pieces of fabric were supposed to protect it.
Does it need to go up the sides?
