01 DuPont GroundGrid

A Geotextile Grid For Ground Stabilization

DuPont GroundGrid is a ground stabilization grid built from high-performance geotextile rather than rigid plastic. Panels ship compact, expand into a three-dimensional honeycomb on site, and are then filled with angular stone to produce a strong, stable surface where bare gravel would rut and wash out.

The confinement is what does the work. Filled cells lock the aggregate in place so it cannot migrate laterally, which is what turns loose stone into an even, load-bearing surface and keeps it that way through weather and traffic. The structure also lets water move horizontally through the grid rather than damming up alongside a pathway, so drainage improves instead of being interrupted. The fabric construction keeps it lightweight and flexible enough to follow ground contours, and easy enough to place without specialist plant.

Infill matters: GroundGrid must be used with 3/4″ angular stone. Do not use pea gravel as an infill. Rounded gravel shifts within the cells and will not lock up, and fines clog the permeability that makes the system drain.

02 Why it works

Confined Stone Behaves Like Pavement

Loose aggregate fails because individual stones can move. Once each stone is confined in a cell, the surface distributes weight rather than displacing under it — so a driveway stops forming ruts at the wheel tracks and a path stops migrating toward its edges. Because the grid is permeable, rainfall still infiltrates instead of running off, which is what makes it an alternative to paving on sites where runoff is a concern.

Pond Edge Applications

The large grid exists for one job: retaining material along a pond edge, where the wider cell suits the placement and there is no traffic load to resist. Its heavier 8.5 oz fabric reflects the exposure rather than a higher load rating.

  • Pond and water feature edges — the intended application.
  • Not for driveways, walkways or parking. Use the small grid for any trafficked surface.
  • Not for ground stabilization of any kind, per the manufacturer.

06 Installation

Four Steps To A Stable Surface

  1. Prepare the base. Excavate and compact the subgrade to suit the load. Where the ground below is soft, lay a landscape fabric first — it stops weed growth and keeps aggregate from being pushed down into the soil beneath the grid.
  2. Expand and anchor. Pull the panel open to its full honeycomb form and anchor the corners with stakes or landscape pins so it holds its geometry.
  3. Connect and fill. Butt panels edge to edge across the area, then fill the cells with 3/4″ angular stone and compact.
  4. Finish flush. Add a thin top layer of stone so the cell tops are covered and the surface is even — that is what spreads load across the whole panel rather than into individual cells.

Measurements in the installation video are metric.

The video shows a ground stabilization application. Only the small grid is recommended for that use.

07 Underneath the grid

Fabric Below The Grid

If the ground below the installation area is soft, a landscape fabric is recommended underneath the grid. It does two jobs: it blocks weed growth coming up through the surface, and it stops aggregate being pushed down into the soil below, which is how a stabilized surface slowly loses the stone that makes it work.

08 Keeping it right

Maintenance

  • Top up the aggregate occasionally where it gets displaced, typically at entry points and turning areas.
  • Check the edges and anchors annually and re-secure anything that has shifted.
  • Rake walkway surfaces periodically for an even texture.
  • Keep the cell tops covered — exposed fabric wears faster than covered fabric.
