01 Curb and gutter inlet protection

The Dandy Curb Bag Sediment Inlet Filter

For a professional strength inlet filter, call in the reliability and durability of the Dandy Curb Bag. Patented and designed for use on curb and gutter inlets, it filters out the most stubborn sediment-laden storm water.

The mechanism is settlement. Flow entering the inlet is slowed by the bag, and the suspended solids drop out of that slowed water and are captured by the geotextile before they reach the inlet rather than being flushed into the storm system and dealt with later.

Bright Orange, And Deliberately So

The bag is fabricated from a bright orange monofilament geotextile, which makes it easy to see on site. That matters more than it sounds: inlet protection only works if it is inspected and maintained, and a filter you can spot from the cab of a truck gets checked.

The overflow design is the detail worth understanding. A filter that blocks completely under a heavy storm becomes a flooding problem. The built-in overflow means the unit keeps functioning as a filter in normal conditions while still passing water when the rate exceeds what the geotextile can take.

Measure the grate, not the opening. The size given is the grate the bag encloses, so a 24″ x 36″ grate takes the 36″ x 24″ bag. If you are working from a drawing rather than the grate itself, check the figure against the frame before ordering.

05 Installation

Installation Guidelines

The bag goes on around the grate, not into the inlet. Stand the grate on end and work from there.

  1. Place the empty bag over the grate. Stand the grate on end and fit the empty Dandy Curb Bag over it.
  2. Fit oil absorbents if using them. Place the absorbent pillow on the bottom of the grate pouch.
  3. Attach the pillow to the tether loop. This stops it shifting inside the pouch.
  4. Tuck the enclosure flap inside so the grate is completely enclosed by the bag.
  5. Lower the grate into its frame. Hold the lifting straps — do not rely on the lifting straps to support the entire weight of the grate — and place the grate street side first, then lower the back edge with the dam into place.
  6. Check the position. When properly installed, the Dandy Curb Bag should be partially blocking the curb hood.
Handling the grate

The lifting straps are there to help you position and later retrieve the unit, not to carry the weight of a cast iron grate. Support the grate itself while lowering it into the frame.

06 Maintenance

Keeping It Working

Inlet protection is only as good as its upkeep, and on an inspected site this is what the inspector will be looking at.

  • After each storm event, remove all accumulated sediment and debris from the surface and the vicinity of the unit.
  • As needed, remove the sediment that has accumulated within the containment area of the bag.
  • If using oil absorbents, remove and replace the absorbent pillow when it is near saturation.

Because the unit is reusable, sediment removal rather than replacement is the normal maintenance action — which is where the running-cost advantage over disposable alternatives comes from.

Dandy Curb Bag FAQs

How do I work out which size I need?
Measure the grate the bag will enclose. The size refers to the grate dimensions, so a 24″ x 36″ grate takes the 36″ x 24″ bag. Eight sizes are stocked, covering 24″ through 48″ grates.
Is there a minimum order?
No, there is no minimum order. Order any quantity, in any mix of the eight sizes.
Does the bag go in the inlet or around the grate?
Around the grate. Stand the grate on end, fit the empty bag over it, tuck the enclosure flap inside so the grate is fully enclosed, then lower the whole assembly back into the frame street side first.
Will it flood the road in a heavy storm?
The unit has a built-in protective overflow design, so once flow exceeds what the geotextile can pass it overflows rather than damming completely. Keeping the unit clear of accumulated sediment is what preserves that capacity.
How often does it need servicing?
Remove accumulated sediment and debris from the surface and vicinity after each storm event, and clear sediment from inside the containment area as needed. If you are running oil absorbent pillows, replace them near saturation.
Is it reusable?
Yes. It is designed to be installed, maintained, inspected and reused, which is where the cost advantage over disposable inlet protection shows up across a long project.
Can it capture oil as well as sediment?
With the optional oil absorbent pillow fitted in the bottom of the grate pouch and attached to the tether loop, yes. Replace the pillow when it approaches saturation.
Why is it orange?
Visibility. The bright orange monofilament geotextile makes the unit easy to spot on site, which means it actually gets inspected and serviced rather than forgotten under a layer of silt.
What does shipping cost?
