Dewitt Pro 5 Landscape And Weed Barrier Fabric

An extra-durable 5 oz landscape and weed barrier fabric made of reinforced and woven polypropylene fibers that have been needle-punched — built for controlling weeds and supporting loose soil areas.

Pro 5 is the heavyweight of the DeWitt weed barrier range. The exclusive needle-punch design lets air, water and the soil's natural nutrients migrate through the fabric while remaining an extremely effective weed inhibitor, and the polypropylene blend is developed specifically to resist wear and tear.

5ounce fabric weight

The heaviest weed barrier DeWitt make, double-sided polypropylene for extra effective durability.

02 Where the weight earns its keep

Stability On Mounds And Slopes

The made-to-last needle punching technique provides extra stability on mounds and hills while allowing optimal moisture permeability. On flat beds a lighter fabric will do; on a graded bank or a slope, fabric weight and needle-punch stability are what stop it creeping and tearing.

03 What you get

Why Pro 5 Gets Specified

  • Premium quality needle-punched fabric, suitable for above-ground covering or in-ground erosion control
  • Heavy-duty and long-lasting, made of double-sided polypropylene — 5 oz
  • Neutral black color that will never fade or discolor, with dependable protection from the sun's harmful rays
  • Maintains high moisture levels in the soil where it is placed
  • Needle punching provides extra stability on mounds and hills, with optimal moisture permeability
  • Stripes spaced every 12 inches to make plant spacing fast and uncomplicated
  • Air, water and soil nutrients migrate through while weeds are inhibited
  • Easy to unroll and cut, and secures with stakes, spikes, rocks or ground staples
Needle-punched, not just woven. The punch points are what let water and nutrients through a fabric this heavy. Without them a 5 oz woven sheet would shed water rather than pass it, which is the difference between a weed barrier and a tarpaulin.

05 Uses and applications

What Pro 5 Is For

Weed control under rock Weed control under mulch Weed control under soil Erosion control areas Mounds & graded slopes Retaining degraded walls Insect prevention Preserving soil moisture Landscape beds Gardening projects
Pro 5 has had success in both the public and private sectors because of that versatility — it works above ground as a covering and in ground as erosion control, which most weed barrier fabrics cannot claim.

06 Pro 5 or 20 Year?

Choosing Between The Two

Both are needle-punched woven polypropylene in neutral black, and both come in the same six widths on 250-foot rolls. The difference is weight and what it buys.

Pro 5 at 5 oz is the heavier fabric, double-sided, with 12″ spacing stripes and extra stability on mounds and slopes. 20 Year at 4.1 oz is engineered around a stated 20-year material lifespan and is rot resistant.

07 Installation

Simple To Install

You do not have to be an expert. Pro 5 is easy to unroll and cut, and can be effortlessly secured with garden stakes, spikes, rocks or ground staples.

Clear the area of existing weeds and debris, roll the fabric out along the bed, overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them, and pin the edges, the seams and anywhere the fabric lifts. Cut planting holes no larger than the plant needs — every extra opening is somewhere light can reach the soil.

Use the stripes. They are spaced every 12 inches with individual colors so plant spacing and layout come off the fabric rather than a tape measure. On a long bed that is the difference between an afternoon and a morning.

10 Common questions

Pro 5 Weed Barrier Fabric FAQs

How much fabric do I need?
Work out the area in square feet and match it to a roll: 750 for the 3′, 1,000 for the 4′, 1,250 for the 5′, 1,500 for the 6′, 2,000 for the 8′ and 3,000 for the 12′. All are 250 feet long. Allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs.
How is Pro 5 different from the 20 Year Weed Barrier?
Weight and what it buys. Pro 5 is the heavier fabric at 5 oz, double-sided, with 12″ spacing stripes and extra stability on mounds and hills. The 20 Year is 4.1 oz, engineered around a stated 20-year material lifespan, and rot resistant.
Does water get through a 5 oz fabric?
Yes — that is what the needle punching is for. The punch points let air, water and the soil's natural nutrients migrate through while the fabric still inhibits weed growth. Without them a fabric this heavy would shed water.
Can I use it on a slope?
That is one of its stronger cases. The needle punching provides extra stability on mounds and hills, so the fabric holds position rather than creeping, and it can be used in ground for erosion control as well as above ground as a covering.
What are the stripes for?
Plant spacing. They are spaced every 12 inches with individual colors, so rows and plant spacing come off the fabric instead of a tape measure.
How do I secure it?
Garden stakes, spikes, rocks or ground staples along the edges, at every seam and anywhere the fabric lifts. Overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them together.
Will the black color fade?
No. The neutral black will never fade or discolor, and it is what provides dependable protection from the sun's harmful rays reaching the soil.
Can it go under rock and mulch?
Yes, that is its most common use — controlling weeds under rock, mulch and soil. It also helps retain soil moisture underneath, which matters more under stone than under mulch.
Is it suitable for commercial work?
Yes. It is a proven product with worldwide success in both the public and private sectors, and the 5 oz weight is specified where lighter fabrics would not survive the traffic or the exposure.
What does shipping cost?
Nothing. Shipping is free on every order, at any quantity.
