DeWitt Sunbelt Woven Ground Cover Fabric

For more than 30 years the DeWitt Company has been at the forefront of developing scientifically engineered ground protection products, and was the first manufacturer to offer a high-performance ground cover fabric for the landscape and greenhouse market.

Sunbelt is the general purpose choice: a heavy-duty woven black polypropylene at 3.2 oz that controls weeds and conserves water in both greenhouse and outdoor applications. The specially treated UV-resistant fabric lets water, air and nutrients pass through while blocking 99.7% of direct and indirect sunlight — which is what stops weed growth getting out of control.

A woven fabric like Sunbelt is built for surface use where it will be walked on, planted through and exposed: it resists tearing and puncture and holds its shape. Two rolls give 3,000 sq ft — pick on width, not area. The 6′ × 500′ and 10′ × 300′ cover the same ground. Choose the 500-foot roll for long narrow runs and the 10-foot for wider beds; matching roll width to bed width is what keeps seams and offcuts down.

Getting The Right Type

Sunbelt is a woven fabric, built for surface use — walked on, planted through and exposed to sun. That is a different job from a non-woven geotextile, which is a filtration and separation product designed to be buried under aggregate.

07 Installation

Laying Sunbelt

Surface laid and pinned. Clear the area of existing weeds and debris first, roll the fabric out along the bed, and secure it with landscape staples or fabric pins — along the edges, at any seam, and wherever the fabric lifts.

Overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them, cut planting holes only where you need them, and keep cuts as small as the plant allows. Every unnecessary opening is a place a weed can find light.

Use the stripes. The 12″ stripes are a layout tool, not decoration. Set your plant spacing off them and rows come out straight without measuring, which is the fastest way to lay out a nursery block or a vegetable bed.

Ground Cover Fabric FAQs

How much fabric do I need?
Work out the area in square feet and match it to a roll: 1,800 for the 6′ x 300′, 3,000 for either the 6′ x 500′ or 10′ x 300′, 3,600 for the 12′ x 300′ and 4,650 for the 15.5′ x 300′. Allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs.
Which roll should I choose if two cover the same area?
Pick on width. The 6′ x 500′ and 10′ x 300′ both give 3,000 sq ft — use the long narrow roll for rows and paths, and the wider roll for beds a 6′ width would not cover in one pass. Matching roll width to bed width keeps seams and offcuts down.
Does water get through it?
Yes. Water, air and nutrients pass efficiently through the woven barrier, which is why it works as a planting fabric rather than just a cover. What does not get through is light — 99.7% of direct and indirect sunlight is blocked.
What are the stripes for?
Plant spacing. The fabric is striped every 12″ so you can set out rows and space plants off the fabric instead of measuring. On nursery blocks and long planting runs it saves a great deal of time.
Is this the same as non-woven geotextile?
