Weed Barrier Fabric — Heavy Grade

When you want a thick, strong fabric that gives dependable weed control, this is it. This heavy grade weed barrier fabric is constructed of both woven and non-woven fabrics, which gives it the high strength of a woven with the permeability of a non-woven — two properties that normally force a compromise.

At 5 oz it is heavier than the hybrid fabrics usually sold under this description, and it is built for the jobs where a standard weed barrier gets shredded, punctured or simply grown through.

02 The trade-off it removes

Strength Or Flow. Usually Not Both.

A woven weed barrier is strong but passes water only through the gaps in the weave — and those same gaps are where weed roots eventually probe through. A non-woven passes water freely but tears. Bonding the two means moisture and air reach the soil while weed germination is blocked at the source, in a fabric that survives being walked on.

03 Worth knowing before you lay it

The fuzzy side is the reason mulch stays put. On a slope or an exposed bed, mulch sliding off a slick fabric is a recurring maintenance job. A textured face gives it something to key into, which is a practical advantage a single-sided fabric simply cannot offer.

Why 5 oz matters. Weed barrier is usually specified light because it is going to be buried under mulch and forgotten. The failures happen at the exceptions — where it is walked on, where sharp stone sits on it, and where a heavy weed pushes at it for a season. Weight is what handles those.

Stone beds are where heavy grade earns its keep. River rock and crushed stone are exactly the conditions that puncture a lightweight fabric during installation, and the damage is done before the bed is even finished.

07 Installation

Three Steps

  1. Prepare the area. Remove all weeds and plants from the area. For increased protection, consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide before laying the fabric down.
  2. Lay, cut and pin. Unroll and cut the fabric to length. If overlapping, allow a 4″–6″ overlap. Cut an X slit where each plant will go. Secure with fabric staples, staggered at approximately one staple per 5 feet.
  3. Cover it. Finish with 3–4 inches of bark, mulch or stone to protect the fabric from ultraviolet light and give the project a finished look.
Cover it, even though it is UV resistant. The 3–4 inch mulch or stone layer is not just cosmetic — UV is what ages an exposed fabric, and a covered barrier keeps working far longer than one left bare in a bed.

08 You will also need

The install calls for staples staggered at roughly one per 5 feet, along every edge, at every overlap and anywhere the fabric lifts. That is what keeps it flat against the soil while you spread mulch over it.

6″ landscape staples are the standard pin for this fabric, and they are sold separately — worth adding to the order rather than discovering the gap on install day.

Heavy Grade Weed Barrier FAQs

Which side goes up?
The smooth woven face with the printed planting stripes goes up; the fuzzy non-woven face goes down against the soil. The textured side grips the ground so the fabric does not shift while you work, and it also helps anchor mulch spread over the top.
What makes this different from a standard weed barrier?
Construction and weight. This is two fabrics in one — woven for strength, non-woven for permeability — at 5 oz. A standard barrier is a single material and lighter, so it either tears more easily or lets weed roots probe through the weave over time.
Does water get through it?
Yes. The non-woven layer acts as a filtration barrier, letting moisture and airflow reach the soil and the plant roots while blocking weed germination at the source. That is the advantage over plastic sheeting, which blocks water entirely.
What are the stripes for?
Layout. The woven face carries printed stripes at 12″ intervals, so rows and plant spacing come off the fabric rather than a tape measure. On a commercial bed or a long run that is most of the setting-out time saved.
How much fabric do I need?
All five widths are on 250-foot rolls: 1,000 sq ft for the 4′, 1,250 for the 5′, 1,500 for the 6′, 2,000 for the 8′ and 3,000 for the 12′. Allow extra for the 4″–6″ overlap between runs.
How much overlap do I need?
4 to 6 inches where runs meet. Overlap rather than butting the edges — a joint that opens is a direct route to daylight for whatever is underneath.
How many staples?
Stagger them at approximately one staple per 5 feet, along every edge, at every overlap and anywhere the fabric lifts. 6″ landscape staples are the standard pin and are sold separately.
Do I have to cover it with mulch?
It is recommended. Finish with 3 to 4 inches of bark, mulch or stone. That protects the fabric from ultraviolet light and gives the project a finished look — UV is what ages an exposed fabric fastest.
Will it stop weeds completely?
It blocks germination beneath it, which handles the weeds coming up through the soil. Seeds that land in the mulch on top can still root in that layer, so an occasional pull is normal. A pre-emergent herbicide before laying the fabric increases protection further.
Can I use it under river rock?
Yes, and that is one of the better reasons to choose heavy grade. Angular stone is what punctures lightweight fabric during installation, often before the bed is even finished.
