Steel J-Pins For Securing Geocell Panels

Steel J-pins hold expanded geocell panels against the ground while the cells are filled. Each pack contains 100 pins, driven in flush with a club hammer — no other tooling required.

On a slope they are doing real structural work during construction. An expanded panel has almost no self weight, and fill placed from the crest downward will drag an unpinned panel with it. The pins hold the geometry until the confined fill is in and the system is carrying its own load.

Example: four panels on a slope calls for around 500 pins — five packs. The same four panels on flat ground need roughly 40 pins, so a single pack covers it.

04 What they do

Why The Pins Matter

The pin is the only thing holding an expanded panel in position until the cells are filled.

  • 22″ of embedment to reach past disturbed surface material into competent ground.
  • Driven flush with a club hammer, through the cells, so nothing protrudes into the fill.
  • Hold the expansion — a pinned panel keeps its cell geometry while fill is placed.
  • Resist downslope creep during construction, when the panel is at its most vulnerable.
  • Steel, not plastic, so pins drive into firm ground without deforming.

Steel J-Pin FAQs

Can I order J-pins on their own?
No — Typar Steel J-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar geocell product and cannot ship alone. Add your panels to the same order and the pins ship with them.
How many pins do I need?
Around 125 pins per panel for a slope application and around 10 per panel for a flat load support application. Pins come 100 to a pack, so slope work needs more than one pack per panel.
What size are the pins?
Each J-pin measures 4″ across the hook by 22″ long, in 0.32″ diameter steel.
How are they installed?
Driven through the expanded cells into the ground with a club hammer, flush with the top of the cell so nothing protrudes into the fill. Pin before filling, not after.
Why do slopes need so many more pins?
On flat ground the panel only has to stay put while fill is placed. On a slope, gravity is working on both the panel and the fill going into it for the whole placement, and the pins carry that until the confined fill is complete and self-supporting.
