Typar GrassProtecta · Heavy Grade · Model 055470

A 6.56′ × 65.6′ roll of GrassProtecta grass reinforcement mesh in heavy grade, covering 432 square feet. The thickest grade in the line at 0.55″, this HDPE mesh installs directly onto existing grass and lets the sward grow through to interlock with the strands — producing a permeable, load-bearing grass surface. Heavy grade is the choice for regular vehicle traffic, heavier loads and turning traffic.

01 Typar GrassProtecta

Grass Reinforcement Mesh That Disappears Into The Lawn

GrassProtecta grass reinforcement mesh is a thick HDPE mesh supplied on a roll and installed directly onto existing grass to protect, reinforce and stabilize the surface against damage from pedestrian and vehicle traffic. It is the answer for grass that wears, ruts and turns to mud under use — without paving over it.

The mesh works by interlock rather than by rigidity. Grass grows up through the apertures and the blades and roots knit around the mesh strands, creating a snowshoe effect that spreads a wheel load across a much larger area instead of concentrating it in a tire print. Typar's oscillated mesh structure adds grip and reduces slip. Once the grass has filled in, the mesh is invisible — and you mow it as usual.

8tons per axle imposed load — reinforced grass

Reinforced grass that carries real traffic: cars, trucks and maintenance vehicles on a surface that stays 100% permeable.

02 Why it works

Permeable, Planted, And Load-Bearing

Because the surface stays open grass, rainwater penetrates naturally into the ground below rather than sheeting off into a drain. That makes GrassProtecta a fit for source control under LID and NPDES guidelines, and a straightforward alternative to impermeable paving where a natural grass driveway or access route is preferred, planning restrictions apply, or the paving budget will not stretch. It also installs far faster and cheaper than rigid plastic grass paving grids.

Standard Grade Vs Heavy Grade

Both grades come on the same 6.56′ × 65.6′ roll covering 432 square feet, in green, made from HDPE with roughly 20% recycled polymer and fully recyclable at end of life. The difference is thickness and mass — which is what determines how much traffic the reinforced surface will take.

When in doubt, go heavy. The mesh is the cheap part of the job compared with re-doing a rutted surface, and the heavier grade gives more margin as traffic grows.

04 Where it goes

Where Grass Protection Mesh Is Used

Anywhere a grass surface has to carry traffic and stay grass.

05 What you get

What The Reinforced Surface Delivers

  • A high level of grass reinforcement — up to 8 tons per axle imposed load.
  • Fast, cost-effective installation compared with plastic grass paving grids.
  • A porous, permeable, stabilized natural grass surface that lets rainwater penetrate the ground below.
  • Normal mowing — the surface maintains like any other lawn.
  • An invisible structure once grass growth is established, hidden down in the roots.
  • ASTM F1951-08 manufacture for ADA accessibility on grass access routes.

06 Installation

Four Steps To A Reinforced Surface

  1. Mow the grass short. The shorter the sward, the closer the mesh sits to the soil and the faster the grass grows back through it.
  2. Unroll the mesh. Roll it out directly onto the existing grass surface, following the line of travel where you can.
  3. Pin it down. Secure the mesh to the ground with steel U-pins, driven flush with a club hammer. Overlap and pin the edges where rolls meet.
  4. Let the grass grow through. Keep the surface out of use until the sward has grown up through the apertures and knitted with the mesh strands.

GrassProtecta can also go onto newly landscaped ground, with the soil seeded as required.

Establishment matters more than anything else you do. Typar recommends leaving the mesh unused until the grass has grown through the apertures — a few months, and up to eight depending on season and location. Using the surface immediately slows grass growth and limits how well the mesh reinforces it.

07 Fixing pins

Order Your U-Pins With The Mesh

The mesh is held to the ground by steel U-pins, driven in flush with a club hammer. Pins come 50 to a bag, and getting the quantity right matters — under-pinned mesh lifts before the grass has a chance to lock it down.

  • A single roll: a minimum of four bags (200 pins).
  • Two or more rolls: a minimum of three bags (150 pins) per roll, plus one extra bag more than the total roll quantity ordered.
Please note: Typar Steel U-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar grass protection product and cannot ship alone.

12 Common questions

Grass Reinforcement Mesh FAQs

How much traffic will the reinforced grass carry?
Once the grass has grown through and knitted with the mesh, the reinforced surface handles up to 8 tons per axle imposed load. The interlock between roots, blades and mesh strands spreads the wheel load across a wide area rather than concentrating it in a tire print.
Standard or heavy grade — which do I need?
Standard (0.45″, 0.245 lb/ft²) suits pedestrian paths, light and occasional vehicle use and overflow parking. Heavy (0.55″, 0.41 lb/ft²) is the choice for regular vehicle traffic, heavier loads and turning traffic. Both cover 432 ft² per roll.
How long before I can use the surface?
Typar recommends leaving it unused until the grass has grown up through the apertures — a few months, and up to eight depending on season and geographic location. Using it immediately slows grass growth and limits how effectively the mesh reinforces the surface, so plan the install ahead of when you need the area.
How many U-pins do I need per roll?
Pins come 50 to a bag. For the most effective pinning, a single roll needs a minimum of four bags (200 pins). For installations of two or more rolls, allow a minimum of three bags (150 pins) per roll, plus one extra bag more than the total roll quantity ordered. Note that Typar Steel U-Pins must be ordered with an accompanying Typar grass protection product and cannot ship alone.
Can I mow over it?
Yes. Once the grass has grown through, the mesh sits down in the root zone and you mow the area as usual. After establishment the structure is effectively invisible.
Do I need to excavate or build a base?
No. Unlike rigid plastic paving grids, the mesh installs directly onto the existing grass surface after mowing — which is what makes it so much faster and cheaper to install. It can also be laid on newly landscaped ground and seeded.
Is it permeable?
Yes. The surface stays open grass, so rainwater penetrates naturally into the ground below. It can be used for source control in line with LID and National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) guidelines, and it is a common alternative to impermeable paving where lot coverage or planning restrictions apply.
Is it ADA compliant for wheelchair access?
GrassProtecta is manufactured to ASTM F1951-08 for ADA accessibility, and grass wheelchair access routes are one of its standard applications. Confirm the specifics of your route with your local authority.
What is it made of?
High density polyethylene, with approximately 20% of the polymer from recycled material, and fully recyclable at end of life. The oscillated mesh structure is designed to increase grip and reduce slip.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is free on every order at Landscape Discount. GrassProtecta ships via freight, typically within four days of order placement, with 1–7 business days in transit depending on location.
