01 Standard grade turf reinforcement

Grass Protection Mesh — 6.7' x 100' Roll

A 6.7' x 100' roll of grass protection mesh covering 670 square feet — the largest coverage per roll in the range, and the standard grade. A tough extruded polymer grid that reinforces grassed areas used by vehicles and pedestrians, laid on the surface and pinned down so the grass grows up through it.

The mesh apertures are 1.375" x 1.25". Grass grows through those openings and forms a root mass around the mesh filaments, so within a season the area resumes its natural appearance while providing a stable surface that withstands lightweight vehicles and heavy pedestrian use.

02 How it works

The Grass Does Half The Work

The mesh is only part of the system. Grass grows up through the 1.375" x 1.25" apertures and forms a root mass around the mesh filaments, knitting the grid into the turf. That combination — polymer grid plus root mass — is what spreads wheel loads and stops the surface rutting, while the area keeps looking like a lawn rather than a car park.

Turf protection mesh does not solve drainage problems. If it is being laid over clay soil, a suitable drainage system should be installed first. If the ground is particularly soft, seek the advice of a professional.

This mesh has a few uses that have nothing to do with vehicles, and they are among the reasons people buy the 100-foot roll.

Dog yards

Stops dogs digging up a backyard, and works well in yards used by multiple or large dogs where the turf takes a beating.

Tree protection

Used as a tree wrap to prevent horses and deer rubbing the bark off trunks.

Root ball wrapping

Some companies use it as a cost-effective alternative to wire frame tree baskets, wrapping the root system while allowing roots room to breathe and grow.

Breathable stack barrier

Works as a breathable barrier underneath stacked hay or straw.

06 Installation

Installation

Surface laid and pinned — no excavation. The preparation and the settling-in period are what determine whether it works.

  1. Prepare the ground. Cut the grass short, get the area as level as possible, and clear any protruding stones or debris. Fill hollows with a mixture of fine topsoil and sharp sand.
  2. Unroll and secure the first end. Unroll the mesh over the area to be protected and secure the initial end with turf staples.
  3. Pin under tension. While the mesh is under tension, place additional pins every yard along each side, then secure the opposite end of the roll.
  4. Butt adjacent rolls. If the area is wider than 6.7 feet, butt the edges of the rolls together and secure by placing a pin across each edge.
  5. Pin down any lift. Finally, pin down any area of mesh that is not in contact with the grass.
  6. Seed if over bare earth. If the mesh is laid over bare earth, apply a suitable grass seed and fertilizer, dressed at approximately 6 lbs per 100 sq ft, or as specified.
Keep traffic off until the grass is established. Vehicles and pedestrians should be kept off the area until the grass has grown at least 1 inch and has been mowed twice with the blade height set high. The area can then be rolled if required. Skipping this is the most common reason a correctly installed mesh underperforms.

Grass Protection Mesh FAQs

How much mesh do I need?
Measure the area in square feet. This roll covers 670 square feet at 6.7' x 100'. Rows are butted rather than overlapped, so you do not need to allow extra for laps — only for cutting around obstacles.
Can I install it at any time of year?
Yes. The mesh goes down whenever you need it — there is no season it cannot be installed in. Grass simply knits through it fastest during the growing season, so an install made outside that window takes a little longer to reach full strength while the mesh protects the surface in the meantime.
How long before I can drive on it?
Keep vehicles and pedestrians off until the grass has grown at least 1 inch and has been mowed twice with the blade set high. The area can then be rolled if required. Rushing this is the most common cause of disappointing results.
Do I overlap the rolls?
No. If the area is wider than 6.7 feet, butt the roll edges together and secure with a pin across each edge.
How many staples do I need?
One every yard along each side of the roll, plus the ends, plus a pin across each butted edge, plus anywhere the mesh is not in contact with the grass. Staples come in cartons of 500.
Can I lay it over bare earth?
Yes. Apply a suitable grass seed and fertilizer afterwards, dressed at approximately 6 lbs per 100 sq ft or as specified, then keep traffic off while it establishes.
Will it fix a boggy area?
No. Turf protection mesh does not solve drainage problems. Over clay soil, install a suitable drainage system first. If the ground is particularly soft, seek professional advice before laying mesh over it.
How does standard grade compare to the heavier grades?
Standard grade suits lightweight vehicles and heavy pedestrian use. For frequently travelled areas with repeat vehicle movements, step up to the reinforced 50-foot roll or the GP-Flex 1800, which is the heaviest grade and adds tested slip resistance.
Can it be used for anything other than parking?
