The Dandy Curb Sediment Inlet Filter

An innovative curb inlet filter made especially for curb inlets and median inlets without grates — the openings that grate-mounted protection simply cannot address. It is designed to handle the worst that sludge-filled rainwater has to offer.

Rather than enclosing a grate, the Dandy Curb sediment inlet filter sits against the face of the opening, ballasted in place with aggregate. Flow is slowed and the sediment is easily captured by the unit prior to entering the inlet. Sediment does not stand a chance.

The overflow design is the detail worth understanding. A filter that blocks completely under a heavy storm becomes a flooding problem. The built-in overflow means the unit keeps filtering in normal conditions while still passing water when the rate exceeds what the geotextile can take.

Available Lengths

Measure the inlet opening, then choose a length that leaves an equal overhang on each side. Seven lengths are stocked from 4 to 16 feet.

Allow for the overhang. The unit is centered against the opening with an equal length of Dandy Curb overhanging each side, so the length you need is the opening plus that overhang — not the opening alone.

05 Installation

Installation Guidelines

No grate to lift and nothing to dismantle. The unit is laid against the opening and ballasted with aggregate through a Velcro access pouch.

  1. Position the unit. Place the Dandy Curb on the ground with the aggregate pouch on the street side, near the inlet on which it will be installed.
  2. Open the access pouch. Open the Velcro access pouch located on the street side of the unit.
  3. Fit oil absorbents if using them. Place the sock in the pouch and push it back into the pouch.
  4. Fill with aggregate. Fill the pouch with aggregate to a level that will keep the unit in place during an event and create a seal between the Dandy Curb and the surface of the street.
  5. Reseal and center. Reseal the Velcro access, then center the unit against the curb or median inlet opening so there is an equal length of Dandy Curb overhanging each side of the opening.
The aggregate does the work

Two things depend on filling the pouch properly: the unit staying put during a storm event, and the seal against the street surface. Under-fill it and flow finds its way beneath the unit rather than through the geotextile, which defeats the installation entirely.

06 Maintenance

Keeping It Working

Inlet protection is only as good as its upkeep, and on an inspected site this is exactly what the inspector will be looking at.

  • After each storm event, remove all accumulated sediment and debris from the surface and vicinity of the unit.
  • If using oil absorbents, remove and replace the absorbents when they near saturation.

Because the unit is reusable, clearing sediment rather than replacing the filter is the normal maintenance action — which is where the running-cost advantage over disposable alternatives comes from.

What is the difference between the Dandy Curb and the Dandy Curb Bag?
The Dandy Curb is for curb and median inlets without grates — it sits against the opening and is ballasted with aggregate. The Dandy Curb Bag is for curb and gutter inlets that have a grate, which slides inside the bag. Match the product to the inlet you have.
What length do I need?

What holds it in place?

What happens if I under-fill the aggregate pouch?
Two things go wrong: the unit can move during an event, and the seal against the street is compromised so flow passes beneath the unit rather than through the geotextile. Filling the pouch properly is the single most important part of the install.
Will it flood the road in a heavy storm?
The unit has a built-in protective overflow design, so once flow exceeds what the geotextile can pass it overflows rather than damming completely. Keeping the unit clear of accumulated sediment is what preserves that capacity.
Does it work on an uneven curb?
Yes, that is part of the design. It is made to conform quickly to the shape of the curb, and the aggregate ballast pulls it down against the street surface to complete the seal.
Is there a minimum order?

How often does it need servicing?
