02 How it works

A Chemical Barrier, Not A Physical One

Every other root barrier we sell is a wall — roots reach it and get deflected around or under. BioBarrier works differently. Time-release nodules bonded to a porous geotextile create a "no root" zone in the soil on both sides of the fabric. Root tips entering that zone stop dividing and turn away; roots outside it carry on growing normally. Nothing is severed, and overall plant health is unaffected.

About the active ingredient. Trifluralin is non-systemic, biodegrades in soil, and has extremely low water solubility, which limits leaching. It acts only on root tips inside the treated zone.

Applications

Because the barrier is a flexible fabric rather than a rigid panel, it goes where a panel cannot — wrapped around a pipe, laid flat under a slab, or shaped to an irregular excavation.

05 The mechanism

Why Roots Turn Away

Time-release nodules

The herbicide is held in nodules bonded to the fabric and released slowly into the surrounding soil, which is what stretches effectiveness across fifteen years rather than one season.

Root tip cell division stops

Trifluralin acts on dividing cells at the growing root tip. A root entering the treated zone simply stops extending in that direction and grows elsewhere.

A zone, not a surface

The "no root" zone extends into the soil on both sides of the fabric, so protection does not depend on a root physically touching the barrier. Roots outside the zone grow normally.

The tree stays healthy

Nothing is cut and the herbicide is non-systemic, so it is not taken up and translocated through the plant. Overall plant health is unaffected.

BioBarrier Roll Sizes

Every roll is the same fabric with the same nodule loading and the same fifteen-year guarantee. Width is the variable — deeper installs and more aggressive species call for a wider roll.

Note the 24" roll is 100 feet where every other width is 102. Typical use is a guide only — root depth varies with species, soil, climate and rainfall.

08 Installation

Three Orientations

  • Vertical. The standard install — the fabric stands in a trench between the tree and whatever you are protecting, creating a treated zone through the full depth of the trench.
  • Horizontal. Laid flat, under a slab, a pathway or a container, so roots cannot climb into the structure from below.
  • Surround. Wrapped around a root ball, a pipe or a utility run, giving protection on every side.

The fabric cuts easily to size, and fixing pins are included with every roll. Where two rolls meet, join them with the sod pins supplied or with construction adhesive.

Storage matters with this product. BioBarrier is a herbicide-based barrier, so its potency depends on how it has been kept. Stock left outside on a pallet in the sun can arrive partially exhausted. Keep yours in a cool, dry place until the day it goes in the ground — and order from someone who does the same.

How does BioBarrier differ from a physical root barrier?
A physical barrier — an HDPE roll or a moulded panel — is a wall that deflects roots around or under it. BioBarrier creates a chemical "no root" zone in the soil either side of a porous fabric. Root tips entering that zone stop dividing and grow elsewhere. Nothing is severed, and water, air and nutrients still pass through the fabric.
Will it harm the tree?
No. Trifluralin is non-systemic, so it is not taken up and translocated through the plant. It acts only on dividing cells at root tips inside the treated zone. Roots outside the zone continue growing normally and overall plant health is unaffected.
How long does it last?
Guaranteed for 15 years. The herbicide sits in time-release nodules bonded to the fabric, which is what spreads effectiveness over that period rather than a single season.
How much do I need?
Measure the run you want to protect. This roll gives you 102 linear feet in one length. Add a little for overlaps if your run needs more than one roll.
Which width should I choose?
Width sets how deep the treated zone runs. Narrow rolls suit shallow trenches, pipe wraps and under-container work; wider rolls suit deeper trenches, foundations and vigorous species. Check the size table and the product selector chart above.
Can it be laid flat rather than vertically?
Yes. It installs vertically in a trench, horizontally under a slab or container, or wrapped as a surround around a root ball or pipe. That flexibility is the main practical advantage over a rigid panel.
How do I join two rolls?
With the sod pins included in the box, or with construction adhesive. Fixing pins ship with every roll.
Does the herbicide leach into groundwater?
Trifluralin has extremely low water solubility, which limits leaching, and it biodegrades in soil. It is non-systemic and acts locally on root tips within the treated zone. The MSDS is in the documentation section above.
Can I cut it on site?
Yes, the fabric cuts easily to size — no special tools needed.
Does it stop roots getting into pipes and septic fields?
That is one of its strongest applications. Wrapped around a pipe or laid over a drain field, the treated zone keeps root tips away from joints and perforations where they would otherwise get in.
How should it be stored before installation?
Cool and dry, out of direct sunlight, until the day it goes in the ground. Heat and sun exposure degrade the herbicide, and a partially exhausted roll will not give you the service life you paid for.
