01 Overview

Type 1 Road Base Geogrid

Road base geogrid is a rigid polymer grid with open apertures, laid between the subgrade and the aggregate base of a road, drive, or working pad. When stone is spread and compacted over it, aggregate pushes down into the openings and is gripped by the surrounding ribs. That interlock is what does the work: loose stone that would otherwise shove sideways under a wheel is held in a confined layer that behaves more like a slab.

The practical effect is load spreading. A wheel load arriving at the surface is distributed across a wider area of subgrade instead of concentrating in one spot, which is exactly what soft or variable ground needs. It also keeps the two layers separate, so base stone does not work its way down into soft soil and soil does not pump up into the base.

Type 1 is the larger of the two roll formats, covering 3,168 square feet, and is the practical choice when you are running continuous lengths down a road or access route.

04 Installation

How It Goes In

Prepare the subgrade

Clear and grade the area, remove unsuitable material, and shape the subgrade to the profile you want. The grid follows the surface it is laid on, so grade it first.

Roll out in the direction of the road

Unroll the grid along the line of travel, keeping it flat and free of wrinkles. Pull it taut so it is in contact with the subgrade rather than bridging over hollows.

Overlap and secure

Overlap adjoining rolls at the seams and hold the grid in position with pins, staples, or spot placements of aggregate so it does not shift while you are placing stone.

Place aggregate and compact

End-dump and spread stone onto the grid, working forward over placed material rather than driving directly on the bare grid. Spread in lifts and compact so the aggregate strikes through the apertures and locks in.

Design note: base thickness, aggregate gradation, and overlap should follow the project engineer's specification for your soils and traffic loads.
