01 Heavy grade grass protection

MudStop® HG Grass Protection Mesh — 6.7' x 25' Roll

A 6.7' x 25' roll covering 167.5 square feet of heavy grade grass protection mesh. It is laid straight onto an existing lawn and stapled down, and the grass then grows up through it — giving you a surface that carries vehicles and foot traffic without rutting out into mud, while still looking like a lawn.

What makes it heavy grade is the osculated mesh pattern: a multi-layer structure rather than a flat sheet, which is where both its strength and its wet-weather traction come from. Manufactured in the USA with built-in UV stabilisation, made with recyclable materials, and ASTM tested. Free shipping on every order.

Each roll needs roughly 100 ground staples — one every 18 inches in all directions.

02 What it does

Reduces Mud, Keeps The Grass

Grass alone cannot take repeated wheel loads. The turf tears, the soil compacts, and the area turns to mud that never fully recovers. The mesh spreads the load across the surface and protects the crowns of the grass plants underneath, so the root zone survives being driven on. Within a season the grass has grown through and the mesh is largely invisible.

04 Where it goes

Where Can It Be Installed?

Effectively anywhere you want protection against rutting from tires or foot traffic, residential or commercial.

Residential parking areas Commercial parking areas Vehicle access roads Golf cart & ATV pathways RV storage lanes Trailer & boat storage Overflow event parking Pedestrian walkways Dog runs Verges & passing places Temporary access routes Grass fire lanes

05 Grade matters

Heavy Grade Versus Economy-Grade Mesh

There is cheaper mesh on the market, and for genuinely occasional parking it will do a job. Two things separate it from heavy grade, and both show up under load.

Economy grade

Provides basic reinforcement for very occasional vehicular parking. The problems are durability and traction. Because the material has low strength it deforms quickly when driven on, and once it deforms it starts rutting out the grass underneath — the exact failure it was bought to prevent. Economy mesh is also typically a flat sheet with no ridges, which becomes slippery for both pedestrians and vehicles once it is wet.

MudStop® HG

The osculated mesh pattern gives greatly enhanced material strength, so it holds its shape under wheel loads instead of deforming into the turf. The multi-layer design also creates a textured surface rather than a flat one, which provides enhanced traction for vehicles and pedestrians alike in wet conditions.

See The Two Compared

The difference is easier to judge in the hand than on paper. This puts MudStop® HG alongside other mesh on the market so you can see the structural difference between a multi-layer osculated pattern and a flat sheet.

If the area will only ever see a car parked on it a handful of times a year, economy mesh is a reasonable choice. For anything regular — a daily parking spot, an access route, an RV pad — the grade is what determines whether the lawn survives.

06 Installation

Three-Step Installation

Installing MudStop® HG in a lawn area is well within reach of a homeowner. Because the mesh sits on the surface rather than being buried, there is no excavation, no base preparation and nothing to dispose of — which is what separates it from a paver or grid system.

Specification Sheet

1 Cutting the grass short before installing grass protection mesh
Step one

Cut the grass short

Cut the area short first, so the mesh can be applied as close to the root zone as possible.

2 Rolling out grass protection mesh across a lawn surface
Step two

Roll out the mesh

Roll the mesh out directly onto the grass surface, working across the area you are protecting.

3 Fixing grass protection mesh down with ground staples
Step three

Staple it down

Using 8″ ground staples, fix the mesh down with one staple every 18 inches in all directions.

On stapling. As a rule of thumb, the more staples you use the more secure the mesh will be. Edges and seams may need additional staples depending on the site. While stapling, smooth out any bumps or bubbles caused by an uneven grass surface. Each 25' roll takes approximately 100 staples.

07 A second use

Excellent For Dog Runs

As well as protecting grass from vehicles, the mesh works well in dog run areas. The osculated pattern is engineered with small openings, which keeps paws from getting stuck — the usual objection to putting mesh anywhere dogs run.

It also stops digging. If your dog has a favourite excavation site in the lawn, mesh over the top ends it. The result is a run that stays mud free and a safe surface for the dog to play on.

08 Heavy vehicles

Parking An RV Or Boat?

If you are parking an RV, a boat or another heavy vehicle on the mesh long term, double the mesh up where the wheels will rest. A very heavy load concentrated on one spot can deform the mesh over time, particularly during heavy rainfall when the ground beneath is saturated.

A second layer at those points provides additional support and prevents the tires indenting into the lawn. The most practical way to do it is to lay a 1½' square of mesh underneath the main layer at each tire position, before the main roll goes down.

09 You will also need

Ground Staples

Each roll of MudStop® HG requires approximately 100 ground staples for a proper installation, at 8″ long. They are sold separately and should be ordered alongside the mesh — the job stops without them.

12 Common questions

Grass Protection Mesh FAQs

How much mesh do I need?
Measure the area you want protected in square feet. This roll covers 167.5 square feet at 6.7' x 25'. Allow a little extra where runs meet, and remember edges and seams take additional staples.
Does it need to be buried?
No. It is laid on the surface of an existing lawn and stapled down. There is no excavation, no base preparation and nothing to dispose of. Cut the grass short first so the mesh sits as close to the root zone as possible.
Will the grass grow through it?
Yes, that is the intent. Once the grass grows up through the mesh it becomes largely invisible, and the mesh sits below the mowing height protecting the crowns underneath.
How many staples do I need?
About 100 per 25' roll, at one every 18 inches in all directions. More is better — the more staples you use, the more secure the mesh will be. Edges and seams often need extra depending on the site.
Can I mow over it?
Once the grass has grown through and the mesh is properly stapled flat to the surface, yes. Make sure there are no bumps or bubbles left after stapling, and set the mower height so the blade is not catching the mesh.
Can I park an RV or boat on it?
Yes, but double the mesh up where the tires rest. Lay a 1½' square underneath the main layer at each wheel position. A heavy load concentrated on one point can deform the mesh over time, especially in heavy rain when the ground is saturated.
Is it safe for dogs?
Yes. The osculated pattern uses small openings specifically so paws do not get caught, and it also stops dogs digging up the lawn beneath it.
Is heavy grade worth it over economy mesh?
For anything beyond very occasional parking, yes. Economy mesh has low strength and deforms when driven on, which starts rutting the grass underneath. It is also usually a flat sheet with no ridges, so it gets slippery when wet. Heavy grade addresses both.
How long does delivery take?
Allow 3–10 business days. Orders typically ship within one business day from Kansas City, and most customers receive them within a week. Shipping is free.
Can I cut it to fit?
Yes. It cuts cleanly with shears or a utility knife, so you can shape it around beds, trees, posts and hard edges. Add extra staples along any edge you have cut — a cut edge lifts more easily than the finished factory edge does.
