A 36″ × 300′ roll of 30 mil impermeable HDPE geomembrane — specified as a water barrier, a bamboo barrier or a root barrier depending on what you are holding back. It stops subterranean water movement, deflects running bamboo rhizomes, and redirects tree roots away from foundations, paving and buried services. The 30 mil sheet is the most flexible of the four gauges and the easiest to handle. Cuts to length with a utility knife, joins with sealant tape, and is made in the USA.

01 DeepRoot · HDPE geomembrane

One Sheet, Three Jobs: Water, Rhizomes And Roots

This is an impermeable HDPE geomembrane installed vertically in a trench. Depending on what you are holding back, the same material is specified as a water barrier, a bamboo barrier or a root barrier — which is why the product is named for both of its main uses. Nothing about the sheet changes; only the application does.

Unlike a geotextile, which lets water through while holding soil back, a geomembrane is built to let nothing through at all. As a water barrier it stops subterranean water movement beneath hardscapes and maintains water equilibrium around foundations. As a bamboo barrier it deflects running rhizomes along its face and back toward the surface, where they can be seen and cut. As a root barrier it does the same for tree roots. It is a wall, not a filter.

02 Why it works

Impermeable, And Tough Enough To Stay That Way

A barrier only works if it stays intact, so the mechanical numbers matter as much as the impermeability. High density polyethylene gives break strengths of 3,735 psi machine direction and 3,877 psi transverse with break elongation over 600%, so the sheet stretches under backfill loading rather than splitting. Puncture and tear resistance are what carry it through installation, which is when most geomembranes get damaged.

03 Choose a roll

Depths, Lengths And Gauges

Depth is set by how deep the water, rhizomes or roots you are stopping actually travel. Gauge is set by how much abuse the sheet will take during installation and service — and, for rhizome work, by how determined the plant is.

04 Choosing a gauge

30, 40, 60 Or 80 Mil

All four gauges are the same polymer and the same impermeable sheet. What changes is stiffness, puncture resistance and how much margin you have against a determined rhizome or a rough backfill.

For running bamboo, go heavy. Rhizome pressure is relentless and a barrier is buried for the life of the planting. The cost difference between gauges is small next to excavating a failed run and starting again.

  • As a bamboo barrier — deflects running rhizomes along its face and back up toward the surface, where they can be inspected and cut rather than escaping the planting.

09 Installation

Five Steps To A Sealed Run

  1. Mark the line and check utilities. Set the run between what you are containing and what you are protecting, and confirm clearances before breaking ground.
  2. Trench to the barrier depth. Keep the trench wall plumb. The barrier only works to the depth it reaches, so match the depth to how deep water, rhizomes or roots actually travel on your site.
  3. Cut to length. The sheet cuts to any length with a utility knife — no heat, no specialist tooling.
  4. Seal every joint. Sheets join vertically or horizontally with sealant tape. This step decides whether the run performs: an unsealed lap is a hole in an otherwise continuous wall.
  5. Backfill in lifts. Keep the sheet vertical and tight against the trench wall as you go, and inspect the finished run for punctures and open laps before closing it up.

For rhizome work, leave the top edge proud. Standing the barrier an inch or two above grade lets you see a rhizome that has tried to cross over the top and cut it before it establishes on the far side.

Water And Bamboo Barrier FAQs

Why is it called a water barrier and a bamboo barrier?
Because it is one material with more than one job. The same impermeable HDPE sheet stops subterranean water movement, contains running bamboo rhizomes, and deflects tree roots. Nothing about the roll changes between those uses, so it is listed under both names.
Which gauge should I use?
30 mil suits water control and general landscape work. 40 mil gives more puncture margin for rougher backfill. For running bamboo, 60 or 80 mil is the sensible choice — rhizome pressure is relentless and the barrier stays buried for the life of the planting.
How deep should the barrier be?
Deep enough that whatever you are stopping cannot travel beneath it. That depends on your soil, drainage, and the species involved. Depths from 18″ to 48″ are available; for running bamboo in good soil, deeper is safer. If you are protecting a structure, take the depth from the design rather than estimating.
How do I join two rolls?
With sealant tape, vertically or horizontally. The sheet itself is impermeable, so the joints are the only place a run can fail — tape every lap and inspect before backfilling.
Can I cut it on site?
Yes — it cuts to any length with a utility knife. No heat welding or specialist tooling is needed for either cutting or joining.
Will it contain running bamboo?

Is it the same as a geotextile fabric?
