Ground Cover Fabric

Ground cover fabric is a woven polypropylene geotextile with excellent puncture and tear resistant strength, and it carries planting stripes for easy plant alignment — so spacing and rows come off the fabric rather than a tape measure.

It is a good product for managing the spread of weeds in a backyard, a planting area, a hillside landscape or a nursery. The way it works is simple: it blocks sunlight so weed seeds cannot germinate properly, and it carries the highest UV resistance in the woven range so it can do that in full sun rather than breaking down in it.

Any fabric stops weeds on day one, because weed control is just denying seeds the light they need to germinate. The difference between a ground cover that is still working in five years and one that has gone brittle and split is how it handles years of direct sun. Temporary lawn protection is the use people overlook. Laid over turf during construction it takes the traffic and the spillage, then lifts off again — which is far cheaper than re-turfing the area afterwards.

06 Installation

Six Steps, Before Planting

The fabric installs in minutes with the right tools and some elbow grease.

  1. Place the fabric on graded soil. Grade and clear the area first so the fabric sits flat against the ground.
  2. Pin it down every 3 feet. Use landscape pins, also called staples. Pinning at 3-foot centers is what stops the fabric moving or whipping up in the wind.
  3. Cut x-shaped holes where plants go. A box or razor knife makes an X you can fold open to dig and plant into the soil beneath.
  4. Or burn the holes with a weed torch. Useful if you have a large number of plantings, or if you prefer symmetrical round holes to knife cuts.
  5. Place the plants in the ground.
  6. Cover the visible fabric with mulch. A good quality mulch on top hides the fabric and protects it from sun and wear.

Keep the openings as small as the plant allows. Every hole beyond what is needed is somewhere light reaches the soil, and light is the whole mechanism you are relying on.

08 Worth knowing

Will Ground Cover Fabric Keep Moles Out?

Not on its own. Ground cover fabric may act as a deterrent, and a hungry mole might not bother tearing through it — but moles come from below, and their powerful front feet can rip through fabric without much effort. A layer under mulch does nothing about them, because they simply tunnel up among the roots.

The combination that does work is gopher wire baskets around plantings, together with the fabric. The wire stops the tunnelling and protects the roots; the fabric handles the weeds. It is simple enough for most people to install themselves, it lasts, and it works on other tunnelling animals as well.

Check what you are dealing with first. Moles are insectivores — they are after the insects in rich garden soil, not your vegetables. If plants are being eaten rather than just undermined, you are more likely looking at voles, gophers, groundhogs or rabbits, and the answer is different.

Ground Cover Fabric FAQs

How does it stop weeds?
By blocking sunlight, so weed seeds cannot germinate properly. That is the whole mechanism — which is why keeping planting holes as small as possible matters, and why UV resistance matters for a fabric that has to keep doing it in full sun.
Which width should I choose?
Match the width to the bed. The 12′ roll is the most popular for landscaping because it gives the least overlap that one or two people can still handle. Buy wider if you want and cut it down on site.
How much do I need?
Every roll is 300 feet long: 1,800 sq ft for the 6′, 3,000 for the 10′, 3,600 for the 12′ and 4,500 for the 15′. Allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs.
What are the stripes for?
Plant alignment. The planting stripes let you set spacing and keep rows straight off the fabric itself instead of measuring, which saves a great deal of time on nursery blocks and long beds.
How do I make the planting holes?
