Driveway Fabric

Driveway fabric is a woven polypropylene geotextile with excellent puncture and tear resistant strength. Its primary use is soil separation over moderate subgrades — keeping the base course and the subgrade from mixing, so the base you paid for keeps behaving like a base.

This is a slit film woven fabric rated at 200 lb, and it is what goes under gravel, asphalt, concrete and paver driveways. It prolongs the life of the drivable surface and cuts the maintenance that comes from a base slowly disappearing into the soil beneath it.

Why separation saves aggregate. Put base stone straight onto soft subgrade and the two mix — fines pump up into the stone, stone punches down into the soil, and the effective thickness of the base drops every year. A separation fabric holds that line, so a thinner base does the job a thicker one would have had to.

Three rolls cover 5,400 sq ft, so choose on width. The 12.5′, 15′ and 17.5′ large rolls all give the same coverage. Match the roll width to the driveway width and you lay it in a single pass with no seam down the middle — which is exactly where a seam is worst, under the wheel tracks.

07 Installation

Laying Driveway Fabric

Excavate and grade the subgrade, then clear anything sharp enough to puncture the fabric. Roll it out across the area and overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them — a separation layer only works where it is continuous.

Place base aggregate from one side, working forward over material already down rather than driving on bare fabric. Compact in layers as you build up. Where the fabric runs up against a wall base or a curb, carry it far enough that soil cannot spill over the edge into the base course.

Do not seam under the wheel tracks. If a driveway is narrower than the roll, lay it in one pass. If it is wider, plan the overlap so the joint falls between the tracks rather than beneath them, where load is concentrated and an opening joint does the most damage.

What does driveway fabric actually do?

Where should the overlap go?
Not under the wheel tracks. If the driveway is narrower than the roll, lay it in one pass. If it is wider, plan the joint to fall between the tracks, where load is lower and an opening joint does less damage.
Do I overlap or butt the seams?
Always overlap. A separation layer only works where it is continuous, and a butted joint that opens under load lets the subgrade and base mix at exactly that point.
Can I drive on it before the base goes down?
Avoid it. Place aggregate from one side and work forward over material already down. Driving or turning on bare fabric risks puncturing it and dragging it out of position.
Is this the same as a drainage fabric?
No. This is a woven fabric for separation and base reinforcement, with high tensile strength. A non-woven drainage fabric is built for flow through the fabric body and particulate filtration. Different jobs.
