01 Capped dual-construction geotextile

Heavy Duty Landscape Fabric For Weed Control And Stabilization

This heavy duty landscape fabric is a double-sided or “capped” geotextile — woven and non-woven polypropylene needle-punched together into one sheet. That is the point of the construction: you get the strength of a woven and the permittivity of a non-woven in a single layer, instead of choosing between them.

For a weed barrier under a bed or hardscape, both properties matter. The woven side carries the tensile strength that survives being walked on, raked over and loaded with stone; the non-woven side lets water and air pass into the soil and retains moisture for plant health rather than shedding rainfall off the bed. Plant lines printed every 12 inches make spacing quick and give you a cut line to work to.

02 Why it works

Woven Strength, Non-Woven Flow

A woven fabric is strong but sheds water at the surface; a non-woven drains well but tears under abuse. Needle-punching the two together produces a capped fabric that resists the mechanical wear of installation and use while still letting water, air and nutrients reach the root zone. It is the construction to specify where a bed will be topped with stone or bark and then left alone for years.

When in doubt, go heavier. The fabric is the cheap part of a planted bed. Pulling stone and plants back to replace a sheet that failed costs far more than the difference between grades.

Sizing a bed: measure the area, then add for overlaps — adjacent runs should overlap several inches so weeds cannot find the seam. Wider rolls mean fewer seams on an open area; narrower rolls waste less on borders and paths.

08 Installation

Five Steps To A Clean Bed

  1. Clear and grade the area. Pull existing weeds, roots and debris, and rake the surface reasonably level — the fabric follows what is underneath it.
  2. Roll out the fabric. Run it in the long direction of the bed, keeping it flat rather than stretched taut. Use the printed lines to keep the run straight.
  3. Overlap the seams. Where runs meet, overlap several inches so nothing can grow up through the joint.
  4. Pin it down. Secure with landscape staples along the edges and through the field, so the sheet cannot shift while you place cover material.
  5. Cut for plants and cover. Cut an X at each planting position using the 12″ lines for spacing, plant through the opening, then cover the fabric with stone or bark mulch.
Keep it covered. Cover material is not just cosmetic — it shields the fabric from UV and foot traffic. Exposed fabric wears far faster than covered fabric.

Landscape Fabric FAQs

What does capped or double-sided mean?
The sheet is two fabrics in one: a woven layer and a non-woven layer, needle-punched together. That gives the tensile strength of the woven and the water and air permittivity of the non-woven, rather than the compromise you get from either fabric on its own.
4.75 oz or 4 oz — which should I use?
Go 4.75 oz where the fabric will take mechanical abuse: stone-topped beds, commercial installs, areas with foot traffic. The 4 oz grade suits standard landscape beds and gardens. Construction, plant lines and roll length are the same either way.
Will water get through to my plants?
Yes — that is what the non-woven side is for. Water, air and nutrients pass through into the soil, and the fabric retains moisture in the root zone rather than shedding rainfall off the surface of the bed.
What are the lines printed on the fabric?
Plant lines, spaced every 12 inches. They let you set out plant spacing without measuring and give you a straight reference for cutting edges and planting openings.
How much should I overlap the seams?
Several inches wherever two runs meet. A butted seam is the first place weeds come through, so overlap it and pin through the overlap.
How do I hold it down?
With landscape staples along the edges and through the field of the sheet, before cover material goes on. Pinning stops the fabric shifting while stone or mulch is placed, which is when most wrinkles and gaps appear.
Does it need to be covered?
Yes. Stone or bark mulch shields the fabric from UV and foot traffic, and exposed fabric wears considerably faster than covered fabric. Plan the cover material as part of the install rather than as an afterthought.
How much does one roll cover?
Multiply the width by the 250′ length: a 4′ roll covers about 1,000 ft², a 6′ roll about 1,500 ft², an 8′ roll about 2,000 ft², and a 12′ roll close to 3,000 ft². Allow extra for seam overlaps and offcuts at borders.
