An Impermeable Water Barrier For Subterranean Water Movement

A water barrier is an impermeable HDPE geomembrane installed vertically in a trench to protect hardscapes and landscapes from subterranean water movement. Unlike a geotextile, which is designed to let water through while holding soil back, a geomembrane is designed to let nothing through at all — it is a wall, not a filter.

That distinction is the whole point. Around a building foundation, the barrier both prevents tree and plant root intrusion and maintains water equilibrium in the soil, so the ground on the structure side does not go through the wet-dry cycling that moves a foundation. On a golf course it separates constructed greens from invasive grasses and surrounding clay soils. In each case the job is to decide where water goes rather than to slow it down.

02 Why it works

Impermeable, And Tough Enough To Stay That Way

A water barrier only works if it stays intact, which is why the mechanical numbers matter as much as the impermeability. High density polyethylene gives break strengths of 3,735 psi machine direction and 3,877 psi transverse, with break elongation over 600% — so the sheet yields and stretches under backfill loading rather than splitting. Puncture and tear resistance are what carry it through installation, which is when most geomembranes get damaged.

Water or roots? If the problem is purely roots and you want water to keep moving through the soil, a root barrier is the better tool. A geomembrane blocks both, which is occasionally more than a site wants.

08 Installation

Five Steps To A Sealed Run

  1. Mark the line and check utilities. Set the run between the water source and what you are protecting, and confirm clearances before breaking ground.
  2. Trench to the barrier depth. Keep the trench wall plumb. The barrier only works to the depth it reaches, so match the depth to how deep water and roots actually travel on your site.
  3. Cut to length. The sheet cuts to any length with a utility knife — no heat, no specialist tooling.
  4. Seal every joint. Sheets join vertically or horizontally with sealant tape. This is the step that decides whether the run performs: an unsealed lap is a hole in an otherwise impermeable wall.
  5. Backfill in lifts. Keep the sheet vertical and tight against the trench wall as you go, and inspect the finished run for punctures and open laps before closing it up.

Water Barrier FAQs

What is the difference between a water barrier and a root barrier?
A water barrier is an impermeable geomembrane: nothing passes through it, water included. A root barrier is designed to redirect roots while letting water and air move through the soil, or in the case of panels and HDPE sheet, to deflect roots without necessarily sealing the ground. If your problem is water movement, or water and roots together, use the water barrier.
Which thickness should I use?
30 mil covers most landscape and hardscape work. Step up to 40 mil where the sheet will see rougher backfill, more aggressive roots or a longer service expectation. The material is also produced in 60 and 80 mil, available on request for demanding installations.
How deep should the barrier be?
Deep enough that water and roots cannot simply travel beneath it, which depends on your soil, drainage and the species nearby. Depths of 18″, 24″ and 30″ are listed here; call for anything deeper. If you are protecting a structure, take the depth from the design rather than estimating.
How do I join two rolls?
