Dewitt Non-Woven Soil Filter Fabric

Soil filter fabric is the solution for two specific problems: holding soil behind retaining walls in place, and keeping drainage pipes from clogging with dirt. It does both by letting water through while stopping the soil that would otherwise travel with it.

The fabric is needle-punched and not woven, which is what allows water to seep through while still keeping dirt out. Its design contains and repels dirt from eroding into unwanted areas under the pressure of gravity and water movement — and it is ruggedly built to hold heavy soil loads back.

Filtration is a two-part job. A fabric that stops soil but also stops water builds hydrostatic pressure behind a wall — which is what pushes walls over. A fabric that passes water but lets fines through clogs the drain it was protecting. Needle-punched non-woven does both halves at once, and that is the whole point of it.

Which Weight Do I Need?

All four weights are the same needle-punched non-woven fabric and install the same way. Heavier means more strength and more puncture resistance for holding heavier soil loads back.

07 Installation

Getting It Right

The phrase that matters in the manufacturer's own description is if installed correctly. Filter fabric is unforgiving of shortcuts because the failure is invisible until the drain blocks or the wall moves.

Behind a wall: line the excavated face and the base before the drainage stone goes in, carrying the fabric up high enough that backfill soil cannot spill over the top edge into the stone. Then place the stone against it and backfill.

Around a drain: wrap the pipe and the surrounding stone completely, so water enters through the fabric from every direction and fines cannot reach the perforations. Overlap generously and never butt the joints.

The top edge is where installations fail. If the fabric stops below the level of the backfill, soil simply washes over the top and into the drainage stone — and the fabric below it makes no difference at all. Carry it up and fold it over.

What does soil filter fabric actually do?
Two things at once: it lets water seep through, and it keeps soil out. That combination is what holds soil behind a retaining wall in place and stops drainage pipes clogging with dirt.
Which weight should I choose?
3.1 oz for light-duty drainage such as backyard french drains and small trenches. 3.5 oz for general drainage and wall backfill, with the widest choice of roll sizes. 4 oz for heavier backfill or sharper aggregate. 6 oz for heavy soil loads, taller walls, coarse angular stone and commercial work.
How much do I need?
Work out the area you are lining in square feet and match it to a roll — the eighteen sizes run from 750 up to 4,500 sq ft. Allow extra for overlapping the joints, which are not optional on a filter layer.
Why non-woven rather than woven?
Non-woven is needle-punched, so water passes through the body of the fabric rather than only at the weave. Woven fabric has higher tensile strength but far lower flow through the fabric, which is the wrong property for a filtration layer.
Does it go behind the wall or under the stone?
Both. Line the excavated face and the base before the drainage stone goes in, and carry the fabric up high enough that backfill soil cannot spill over the top edge into the stone.
How do I wrap a drainage pipe?
Wrap the pipe and the surrounding stone completely, so water enters through the fabric from every direction and fines cannot reach the perforations. Overlap the joints generously rather than butting them.
What is the most common installation mistake?
Stopping the fabric below the level of the backfill. Soil then washes straight over the top edge into the drainage stone, and the fabric below makes no difference at all. Carry it up and fold it over.
Can I use it as a weed barrier?
It is designed as a buried filtration and separation fabric rather than a surface product. For weed control in an exposed bed a woven weed barrier is the right tool, since it is built to be walked on, planted through and exposed to sun.
Will it clog over time?
A correctly specified and correctly installed filter fabric passes water while holding fines back at its face. Problems come from soil bypassing the fabric at the top edge or at open joints rather than from the fabric itself.
