Dewitt Non-Woven Geotextile Fabric

Non-woven geotextile fabric made from strong polypropylene staple fibers that will not rot or decay. It keeps soil in place while permitting water to pass through — which is the whole job of a geotextile, and what separates it from a weed barrier.

Constructed for multiple landscaping and construction needs, it is very tough and long lasting. It is commonly laid underneath foundations to provide soil stability, behind retaining walls and banks for permanent erosion control, and as cushioning on the harder jobs — landfills, embankments, roads, sports stadiums and airfields.

02 Why it lasts

It Will Not Rot Or Decay

The fabric is built from polypropylene staple fibers, which is why it can be buried and forgotten. A geotextile that degrades takes the separation layer with it and the aggregate above starts migrating into the subgrade — the exact failure it was installed to prevent.

Separation is the function people underestimate. Put aggregate straight onto soft subgrade and the two mix: fines pump up into the stone, stone punches down into the soil, and the layer you paid for stops behaving like a layer. A non-woven geotextile between them keeps each where it belongs while still letting water through.

Which Weight Do I Need?

All three weights are the same fabric type and install the same way. Heavier means more strength, more puncture resistance and more cushioning — and it costs more, so there is no sense over-specifying a light-duty job.

Every weight comes in both formats, and both cover exactly 4,500 square feet at the same price. So the choice is not about area — it is about the shape of what you are covering.

Fewer seams is the real saving. Every overlap costs material and labor, and every seam is a place the separation layer can be compromised. Matching roll width to the shape of the area does more for the installed cost than the roll price does.

06 A different product

Non-Woven Is Not Woven

These two get confused constantly and they are not interchangeable. Non-woven geotextile is a filtration and separation product: it is designed to be buried, it passes water readily through the fabric body, and it cushions.

Woven fabric is a surface and reinforcement product — higher tensile strength, far lower flow through the fabric, built to be walked on, planted through and exposed. Use woven for weed barrier and ground cover; use non-woven under aggregate, behind walls and in drainage.

08 Installation

Laying Non-Woven Geotextile

Grade the subgrade and clear anything sharp enough to puncture the fabric, then roll it out across the area and overlap adjacent runs rather than butting them. Pin the edges enough to hold position until the fill goes on.

Place aggregate from one side, working forward over material already down rather than driving on bare fabric. In a trench or french drain, line the excavation, place the stone, then fold the fabric back over the top so the aggregate is fully wrapped.

Do not skimp on the overlap. A separation layer only works where it is continuous. A butted joint that opens under load is a direct path for fines to pump up into the aggregate, and by the time you can see the consequence at the surface the fix is excavation.

Non-Woven Geotextile FAQs

How much fabric do I need?
Every roll covers 4,500 square feet, in either format. Work out the area in square feet, divide by 4,500, and allow extra for overlapping adjacent runs — overlaps are not optional on a separation layer.
Which weight should I choose?
4 oz for drainage, filtration, garden separation and light-duty landscape work. 4.5 oz for the same jobs with more margin where the subgrade is softer or the stone sharper. 8 oz for heavy-duty separation and cushioning — roads, embankments, landfills, stadiums, airfields and asphalt overlay.
Does the roll format change the coverage?
No. The 12.5′ x 360′ and 15′ x 300′ both cover 4,500 square feet at the same price. Choose the long narrow roll for trenches and drainage lines, and the wide roll for pads and large areas where fewer seams across matters.
What is the difference between woven and non-woven?
Non-woven is a filtration and separation product designed to be buried — water passes readily through the fabric body and it cushions. Woven has higher tensile strength but far lower flow through the fabric, and is built for surface use where it is walked on, planted through and exposed. They are not interchangeable.
Can I use it as a weed barrier?
Weed control is one of its listed uses, and it works beneath walkways, bricks and concrete. For an exposed planting bed a woven weed barrier is the better tool — it is built for surface exposure and being planted through.
Will it rot?
No. It is made from strong polypropylene staple fibers that will not rot or decay, which is what allows it to be buried permanently as a separation layer.
Do I overlap or butt the seams?
Always overlap. A separation layer only works where it is continuous, and a butted joint that opens under load becomes a direct path for fines to migrate up into the aggregate.
Can I drive on it before covering it?
Avoid it. Place fill from one side and work forward over material already down. Driving or turning on bare fabric risks puncturing and dragging it out of position.
Is it suitable behind a retaining wall?
Yes — it offers long lasting, permanent erosion control when used behind retaining walls and banks, keeping the retained soil in place while letting water drain through rather than building pressure.
