02 Confinement

Cut Base Material By Up To Half

By confining the infill, lateral movement away from the applied load is reduced. The grid functions as a large mat, distributing the load over an extended area and spreading out the downward pressure. On a slope it holds infill in place and reduces erosion, and because the material is designed to drain, water flows through while the encased layer stays intact.

04 Where it gets used

Applications

Permeable pavements Parking areas Driveways Access roads Fire access lanes Boat ramps Ports & marinas Golf cart paths RV parking Trails & pathways Roadside shoulder reinforcement Pavement base support Permeable paver support
Reduces base material by up to 50%. Confinement also cuts the stress inflicted on the subgrade when a load is applied, and lowers overall installation cost through the reduction in rock required.

05 What you don't need

No Gravel Base Required

EnviroGrid does not require a gravel base. The cell depth and the compaction that takes place inside the confined cells do that work instead. Lay an approved geotextile, set the grid and fill — which saves both labor and material cost.

06 What you do need

Geotextile Fabric Beneath The Grid

A layer of geotextile fabric below the grid is required, to stop the gravel absorbing into the ground while providing adequate strength and drainage. J-hooks and heavy-duty zip ties are also recommended for attaching multiple panels together.

We recommend heavy-duty 6 oz drainage fabric, 6' × 300' beneath the grid.

07 Infill options

Fill With Gravel, Sand, Dirt Or Grass

EnviroGrid takes a range of infill types, so the same grid builds a reinforced grass driveway, a strong gravel surface, or a dirt area that resists erosion.

Gravel

Aggregate paving

  • Driveways and parking
  • Access roads
  • Fire access lanes
  • RV and boat parking

Grass

Vegetated

  • Reinforced grass driveways
  • Green parking spaces
  • Overflow parking

Sand or dirt

Erosion resistant

  • Slope stabilization
  • Trails and pathways
  • Areas prone to washout

Base support

Beneath pavement

  • Pavement base support
  • Permeable paver support
  • Base reduction

08 Choosing a depth

Which Depth Cell Do I Need?

All four depths share the same 8.4' × 21.4' grid, 179.76 sq ft coverage and 10.2" × 8.8" cells. Cell depth is what sets the load capacity.

Stormwater storage. EGA20-6 infilled with #57 stone under a 1" wearing layer can provide 2.8" of rainwater storage. Geo Products does not publish a single load figure for the 8" — it is specified by application, so check the spec sheet or ask us.

09 How it works

How EnviroGrid Works

A quick overview covering how the EnviroGrid system works and its advantages for ground stabilization applications — worth three minutes before you order, particularly if you have not installed geocell before.

10 Installation

Installation Overview

The sequence runs to five stages, with no gravel base course required at any point. The full guide covers base preparation, layout and infill in detail.

  1. Prepare the subgrade. Grade to the finished profile and compact. No gravel base course is required.
  2. Lay the geotextile. Required across the full area beneath the grid, to stop infill absorbing into the soil.
  3. Expand and position the panel. Each opens to 8.4' × 21.4', covering 179.76 sq ft.
  4. Join and anchor. EnviroLock zip ties link panel to panel; J-hooks hold the assembly against the subgrade.
  5. Fill and compact. Gravel, sand, dirt or grass, screeded level with the top of the cells.

15 Fabric and anchors

EnviroGrid Accessories

A geotextile layer beneath the grid is required on every install. The expanded grid then has to be held in position and the panels joined to each other, or the cells shift and the assembly creeps out of line.

Rebar J-Hooks — 18"

EJHR-18

EnviroGrid only

Holds the expanded grid down against the subgrade so it stays in position while the infill goes in and gets compacted.

EnviroGrid 24 inch rebar J hook anchor

Rebar J-Hooks — 24"

EJHR-24

EnviroGrid only

The longer hook, for the deeper 6" and 8" cells and for softer subgrades where an 18" hook won't get enough bite.

17 Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many grids do I need?
Each expanded grid is 8.4' × 21.4' and covers 179.76 square feet. Divide your total area by 179.76 for grid count, then add for cuts and waste around curves and edges.
Which depth should I choose?
The 6" is rated at 60,000 lbs and is designed for emergency access, or areas where heavy vehicles drive over regularly. The comparison table above sets out all four depths side by side.
Do I really not need a gravel base?
Correct. EnviroGrid does not require a gravel base, because of the cell depth and the compaction that takes place inside the confined cells. You do still need a geotextile layer beneath the grid.
Is the geotextile fabric optional?
No, it is required. Without it the gravel absorbs into the ground below and the system loses its confinement. We recommend the heavy-duty 6 oz nonwoven drainage fabric at 6' × 300'.
How do I join panels together?
J-hooks or EnviroLock heavy-duty zip ties. The zip ties are the quickest way to link panel to panel into one continuous mat; the J-hooks anchor the assembly down to the subgrade.
What can I fill the cells with?
Gravel, sand, dirt or grass. The same grid builds a reinforced grass driveway, a strong gravel surface, or a dirt area that resists erosion, and it also works as base support beneath pavement.
Will the J-hooks from the LSG grid fit?
No. EnviroGrid uses its own hooks, EJHR-18 and EJHR-24. The JHR18 and JHR24 hooks are for the Cell-Tek LSG series only.
How does EnviroGrid compare to the Cell-Tek LSG grid?
Both are HDPE geocell load-support grids used the same way. EnviroGrid panels are 8.4' × 21.4' in black, come in four depths up to 8", and carry a 10-year material warranty. The LSG panels are 8' × 22.5' in green and come in three depths up to 6". Coverage per grid is almost identical, so it usually comes down to depth needed, colour and price.
Is it made in the USA?
Yes. EnviroGrid is manufactured in the USA by Geo Products, in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility, from 100% virgin HDPE resin.
What does shipping cost?
Nothing — shipping is free on all orders. See the transit map above for approximate ground delivery times.
