Deeproot UB-24: A Dependable and Versatile Root Barrier
Tree roots can cause havoc on home foundations, driveways, and patios. In areas around the US like the Pacific Northwest tree roots from established trees can spread underneath concrete and hardscape patios lifting and cracking the patio. If left unchecked roots can even grow under the patio in search of water and grow under and through the home foundation.
To prevent this kind of damage contractors and homeowners can implement
DeepRoot UB-24 root barrier panels that are engineered to divert roots further down into the soil and away from patios, pools, hardscapes, and other structures.
Tree roots pushing up concrete slab walkway
A root barrier is a literal physical barrier that’s installed to keep roots from growing in a certain direction. The barrier is made from interlocking plastic pieces and when roots over time grow into the plastic rather than continue to grow in that direction, the plastic barrier sends them outwards, so they don’t get underneath, whether it’s a sidewalk, foundation of a home in this case or a patio.
Installation:
1. Dig and expose the roots :
First, you will need to dig out the area around where you wish to place the barrier. Digging down 24 inches for placement of the UB-24 panels. Expose the roots to air and assess that you can reach the roots and remove them without damaging the surrounding landscape and structures.
2. Prune the roots:
Once the roots are accessible then prune them back and enable placement of the root barrier panels so that the DeepRoot panels can stand vertical in the trench. When the roots grow back in future years they will hit that barrier and spread downward rather than continuing to grow toward the foundation of the house.
PRO TIP : frequently you may have to notch the barriers in order to get it around immovable obstacles.
3. Install the root barrier panels:
Next place the interlocking panels into the trench. Each panel joins together by sliding into the zipper interlocking system of the next panel. When placing the panels in the ground ensure the ribbed side is facing the tree roots. This is key as the panel ribs help to guide the roots deeper into the ground. Backfill the trench with the same soil you’ve taken out of the trench.
4. Compact and water the backfill soil:
After the panels are in the ground and covered with soil it’s important to water the roots and ground and to compact it down tight. Watering and compacting the soil helps reduce any ruts or ground depressions over time and enables the soil to support more weight.
Root barrier panels are a great tool. They mitigate against shallow roots and help train them to dig deeper into the ground seeking moisture instead of meandering about the surface and going into unwanted areas.
1.Cityscape planter boxes
Cities use root barrier panels in cityscape applications to help reduce the incidents of roots busting out of the planter and cracking the surrounding roads and sidewalks. By encircling the tree you can again help direct the tree roots down deeper which will make for a more sturdy tree.
2. Driveway and/or patio edging
A primary application for roots from wrecking driveways is to place Deeproot panels along the tree side of the driveway. A physical barrier dissuades the roots from routing under the asphalt or concrete slabs and will help mitigate future damage.
3. Near home foundation walls
Understanding root barriers. For many homes in the US, root barriers should be an essential part of foundation maintenance. Used correctly, root barriers may improve foundation performance, delay or even eliminate the need for foundation repair and when foundation repair is done, root barriers can make the repair more effective.
