Deeproot UB-18: Protect Driveways, Walkways and More
Tree roots are a common cause of landscape and hardscape damage. When a tree grows undirected the roots will take the path of least resistance and seek out water or other nutrients in the soil. This behavior can lead to shallow root networks that emerge close to the surface and can lead to damage to surrounding concrete sidewalks, patios, and planter boxes.
Additionally, roots if left unchecked can break into drain and sewer piping, foundation cracks, and even into residential swimming pools causing thousands of dollars of damage in the process. The worst part about this is that much of this carnage takes place unseen until it’s too late.
Prevent root intrusion using DeepRoot barrier panels.
Root barriers are rigid but flexible mechanical barriers used to maneuver the roots of trees down and away from paved areas like sidewalks and paths. In the following, we will go over how to assemble UB-18 root barrier panels for a surrounded application where hardscapes are located on all 4 sides including curbs, walkways, etc. To start assembly, locate the top of the panel by the double top edge. Each panel has a built-in zipper joiner to make assembly much easier to perform.
18” Depth DeepRoot Barrier Panels
Using your thumb as a guide, slide the panels together keeping the double top edge on the top. Once this is done, the edges will connect together. For surrounding applications, it's much easier to assemble the panels with the ribs facing away from you. Once you have connected all 5 panels, in a line, slide the edges of the two ends together to form a circle. All the ribs must be on the inside facing the tree. This is important because the ribs are the mechanisms that will guide the tree roots down and away from the hardscape you are protecting. Place the circle barrier into the tree opening. The double top edge of the barrier should be 1/2” to 1” above the soil grade. Plant the tree in the center of the barrier. When installed correctly, the root barrier will prevent roots from creeping into the surrounding hardscape as the tree continues to grow and mature.
DeepRoot panels like UB-18 and UB-24 will encourage roots to grow down into the soil to help stabilize the tree and discourage shallow root growth while allowing the roots to grow further down. As the roots grow even deeper into the soil, they will provide a more secure footing for the tree and make it less likely to fall over or become damaged by winds or storms.
Using Deeproot UB-18 Root Barrier Panels is an ideal way to prevent unintended tree root damage and it’s good for trees. Each DeepRoot root barrier panel is designed to help train roots to grow deeper into the soil and further establish the root systems of trees enabling them to better withstand what nature throws at them.
Root panels support overall tree health and are a great insurance policy against potential root damage. These UB-18 panels have a couple of unique features that are crucial to diverting roots away from unwanted areas.
Rugged 80 Mil thick HDPE to prevent puncturing
90-degree vertical ribs that deflect and guide roots away from structures and hardscape and down further into the soil
Ground locking tabs resist heave and lifting from trees, keeping the barriers in place
UV Stabilized resins that inhibit breakdown
DeepRoot UB-18 Patented Design
Another feature of the UB-18 Root Barrier Panel that enables these as the perfect solution for guarding against tree root damage is the interlocking zipper connections. Each panel end has an interlocking zipper connection that includes the Anti-Lift Ground Lock Tab.
This patented connection technology makes it a superior choice over other root prevention options by making it nearly impossible for tree roots to dislodge the panels and pop them out of place. Other panels without the anti-lift technology can become disconnected and will pop out of place enabling them to migrate toward the surface over time as the roots push them up. This is not what anyone is looking for in a durable root blocking system. By investing in the DeepRoot system you can rest assured that your panels will stay where they need to be.
To the right / below (if viewing on mobile device) is a diagram of the DeepRoots Zipper Tab technology and how the interlocking panels work.
A couple of the more typical applications for DeepRoot UB-18 root barrier panels are as follows:
1. Along driveways and walkways
Front yard trees are notorious for sending roots under driveways which over time can lead to bulging in asphalt and cracking of concrete. This issue can be easily prevented if during the planting of trees a root barrier is put in place along the driveway facing any trees.

2. Backyard patio hardscapeA place where tree roots can damage the home and ruin the look of your backyard is around the back patio. Unguided tree roots push up concrete and move patio pavers with ease over time. It might not be immediately noticeable but roots seeking moisture will burrow under you patio and push up asphalt and concrete as they continue to grow. Prevent this situation by using UB-18 barrier panels along the edge of your patio.
